I'm at a college counseling center and am working many hours over my expected 40. Is there a limit on how much we can work in a week? I have looked online and can't find anything. I'm so tired...
I doubt it. I think my internship year I worked about 70 hours a week. I feel your pain. You could speak with your training director about itI'm at a college counseling center and am working many hours over my expected 40. Is there a limit on how much we can work in a week? Yah. Tried that. Not real into protecting staff at my site. It's a lot of catering to clients. They basically consider us part of student services.I doubt it. I think my internship year I worked about 70 hours a week. I feel your pain. You could speak with your training director about it

I'm sorry you are having this experience. Especially if they advertised a 40 hr work week. I interviewed at one site that refused to answer how many hours, on average, an intern worked. The were VERY evasive and even turned the question around on me ("are you saying you don't like to work hard?). They never gave me a firm answer and when I asked again a man on the interview panel started writing a note on his pad of paper! I ranked them very low. If the interns work a lot, just say so. I don't like the misrepresentation piece.Yah. Tried that. Not real into protecting staff at my site. It's a lot of catering to clients. They basically consider us part of student services.
That being said, internships care a lot about intern evaluations bc it can impact accreditation. What did your training director say when you brought up the issue?Yah. Tried that. That's my understanding as well. It's one of the reasons it's important to get a sense of what is normal at the sites you rankTo clarify, the way that most internships are set up and how interns are classified, they are not subject to FLSA rules regarding things like overtime and whatnot. At least, last I checked.
It also speaks to poor management. Responding to high service volume by increasing the load on staff rather than using it as justification for the need for expansion suggests to me that the leadership is more concerned with pleasing the admin than sustaining the centerThat's my understanding as well.
