Apologies if this is a stupid question or something that has been addressed here before, but I'm wondering where I can find information on internships and residencies. My friends studying human medicine seem to have access to all of these statistics and recommendations, but I don't know where to look to find those things for us. Things like match rates for various schools, average class rank/grades from matched applicants, most difficult specialties to match into would be nice to know. Also, more general advice for maximizing your desirability to internship/residency programs: is research experience/publishing important? how about externships during clinical year? are academic or private practice externships better? does an academic internship look better when applying for residency?

I don't think the info is quite as expansive as it might be on the human med side.

I don't know of anywhere that has this information outright. Starting with virmp is always a good place to start though. There could also be some info in the literature.

In terms of how to best be competitive for an internship or residency, this will vary widely by field. Academic vs. private practice is a matter of preference. I think there are some fields where one is preferred over the other but things can vary even within a field. I know I have a friend who is planning on applying to surgery residencies, and she focused mainly on getting an academic internship because that was what was recommended to her. I am interested in zoo where you generally first complete a small animal internship. I have been told by some people in charge of residencies that they strongly favor academic internships and by others that they strongly favor private practice internships. In the end, I just had to choose what was best for me.

Research and publishing certainly wouldn't hurt. It is especially important in some fields such as zoo. In terms of externships prior to graduating, it is often a good idea to go places that you are considering applying for an internship or a residency. You can decide if you like the place, they can get to know you, and you can ask them what they look for in a candidate.

Is this just something you figure out by asking clinicians? Because the VIRMP site doesn't have much information, nor do the specialty college websites.

Yes, I would definitely talk to clinicians.
