I've cut my orientation essay down to 560 words--it was originally over 700. I'm having a difficult time cutting it down further. All of my essays will be under 500 for sure.

Is it common for students to submit essays over 500 words? Has anyone done so? Think it's a risky move?

Feedback would be appreciated. I really like what I've done with the essay, I just need to cut it down further, and I can't find anywhere to cut. I've gotten feedback from others, which have helped get it down to 560.

The listserv has discussed this. The conclusion seems to be that a few over won't kill you, but if it's a lot the TDs can notice. Honestly, there's probably something you can cut out--I managed to get my essays under 500 words.

I have one essay that is 502 words. Trying to figure out where I could eliminate a few words was making me crazy (and I had already whittled it down from 550 words), so I left it as is. Should I go back and make it 500 or less, or is it fine as is? Thanks!

our DCT told us to not worry about this, and that anything under 520-530 would not be noticed. some people have said under 550 is fine. no one is counting words and the text box won't cut you off, but if it LOOKS extra long, then it might be problematic.

so, to the 502, i say psh, fine. to the 560... maybe shoot for 520-530?
