Quick question

We've had two interns, one quit and one got fired

We (interns only) are forced to pick up their calls and their work

I understand that there is little we can do if we are within our 80 hr/avg over four weeks. Which at times we have exceeded. But do we have any rights to their pay to be divided up or anything else we can do in this situation?

In a "real world job" this would never be acceptable either you hire more workers or give raises to your current emplyoees

If you ask about pay, something tells me that your glorious program will fire you.

Stick it out til CA-1 year. Sounds like you're in a bad place..

I can't even imagine the look on my PDs face if I would ask that. My best advice is to just get through the next 4 months without rocking the boat.
 
Yeah I dont plan on saying too much

Part of my problem is that I dislike my current program. It's long story. Lots of false promises. Its not the work I mind, its the rotations that I have to do the work on, which have no relevance to anesthesia.

I cant wait for the glory days. The only happy people on a daily basis on this hospital are the anesthesia guys and the radiologists. and also the CEO

Its not the work I mind, its the rotations that I have to do the work on, which have no relevance to anesthesia.

I know ward months can be draining... but this mode of thinking amongst interns is unwise. I hate my intern year just as much as the next guy, but your rotations ARE relevant to your future career. Not all your patients will be perfectly healthy. Learn about their health problems because YOU will be the physician who does the pre-op, manage them intra-op and immediately post-op. Not the cardiologist, not the pulmonologist, etc...

Any monkey (ahem.. not pointing any fingers 😉) can practice cookbook anesthesia, but it's your deeper understanding and knowledge base that makes you a DOCTOR. i.e. For my cardiology rotation, I beefed up on my EKG interpretation, pharm, physiology, and pre-op evaluation. Ok enough preaching... Rock on

Our very own SDN Socrates, Milmd...ever-disposed to lead discussion with inquiry. I want to be annoyed but you bring up such good points...

Nope...not necessarily...sorry. My wife can attest to this...she works in a "real world job" in a company that's understaffed at the moment. She has to pick up a lot of the slack especially when someone's out sick. The company refuses at the moment to hire more workers, and the only extra pay she gets is for whenever she works overtime (she's not in a salaried position). If she were in a salaried position, she likely wouldn't see much extra $$ for the extra work she puts in.

This happens all the time, I'm afraid...
