Do you have to do an IM internship in order to apply for a PGY2 neuro spot?

I'm a psych intern, and am considering switching to neuro - just wondering if I'd have to repeat internship if I made the switch. My internship has only 2 months of medicine and one month of CCU, the rest is psych, neuro, FP, EM, etc.

Anyone know what the requirments are?

With only 2 months of medicine and 1 month CCU, I think you'd have to complete another internship. I believe the requirements for most programs is at least 6 months of medicine in PGY1 (might be 8 months)....Then again, there may be programs out there that would still interview you despite these usual PGY1 requirements.

Even if you did apply for a PGY2 spot it would not be through the Match since they offer PGY2 spots which start a year later, unless you don't mind sitting out a year...otherwise I imagine you'd have to browse the SF Match site for open PGY2 positions with the start date you desire...

But this just my 2 cents...You would benefit well by contacting several programs and get a feeling for which program directors would consider you.

If you are switching into neurology and wish to take the ABPN board examination, you will need to have a sufficient number (6) of IM months. You may want to switch around your rotations for the second half of this year to fulfill the requirements without (a) taking time after your neurology residency or (b) taking time prior to your neurology residency to fulfill these requirements. I think you will be okay, I myself and a DO so my intern schedule is not a straight year of IM, it goes something like this---

Infectious Disease
Neurology
Emergency Med
General Surgery
CCU
Family Practice
Vascular Surgery
Internal Medicine
ICU
Pediatrics
OB/GYN
Rheumatology
Internal Medicine

The six months of medicine you have to do does not necessarily mean wards, if you do cards, endocrine, etc, those count.

The difference between me and my MD co-intern is that he does one extra month of neurology, one extra month of IM, and instead of surgery months, he will be doing IM-specialties:Endocrine, cards, etc
