Hello there,
I am in need for advice. I am a third year DO student and want to apply to MD family medicine programs. Does this mean I can apply directly to the program and be done in three years or do I have to do the one year internship then apply? I realize there are fast track programs if I were to go the DO route. Please any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You do not have to complete the AOA internship... you can apply directly into a PGY1 spot for FP. Remember that the DO FP residencies are also only 3 years... so is there really an advantage to going to a MD FP residency?

I picked an MD EM residency because I would have been done in three years... instead of the 4-5 years required for DO EM residencies.

Hey QuinnNSU,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I still am going to pursue the DO fam med programs. The reason I want the MD ones is because there are very few DO FP programs in California, esp So Cal. So I am definitely going to search for all the options before applying. Thanks again!

No problem. I will warn ya though, if you plan on applying to MD FP residencies, you should atleast get a letter from a PD at a FP program... so that means doing an audition rotation at a MD FP residency. This letter will mean more than any other LOR you could come up with.
