looking for people who were off cycle with the match for rotating internships. I have a few questions! What did you do while waiting for match to start? Are there options within or out of the match that start earlier? Overall experience with being off cycle.

I was not one of those people but have worked with several. My internship program did take a few island school interns each year (outside of the match) in the winter so they would start when they graduated, not sure if they still do that. Because they'd finish at a weird time, most worked ER after their intern year ended until they could hop onto the next match cycle. So you could do that (or relief, or vaccine clinics, whatever) until the next match cycle, whether you started an off cycle internship right away or waited. You could also get a FT job but that is a little more complicated of course.

Thank you for your response. I was thinking about relief but I am back and forth on if places would take someone who has never worked a shift before. Is it reasonable to do relief as your first shift ever?

I think it depends on you, honestly! I wouldn't recommend ER relief, but GP relief or vaccine clinics should be okay. If you do GP, ideally you'd be reliefing at a multi-doctor clinic. If they don't want a brand spankin' new grad, they won't take you Some relief doctors, even seasoned ones, also stipulate that they won't do surgeries/dentals while reliefing so that could be discussed as well potentially. That would likely make you a less attractive candidate though

I don't have experience with off cycle internships myself but have seen what friends/colleagues have done in these circumstances. Agree with pp9! My rotating internship (which I finished a year ago) does accept students to start in Jan (off cycle). This internship does take students through the match and outside the match. So there are internships out there that can accommodate if you want to start your internship right after graduating vet school. Programs may not publicize such but you can contact administrators at already established internships to see if this would be possible. The draw back is that there are less options. Positive is not having to pay VIRMP for the cycle and at least you don't have to worry about not matching. Alternatively, I have seen colleagues work at a practice for a few months while waiting to start their internship.
