Interpretation of the word "Gunner"

I always thought that "gunner" was just part of the verbage at my dental school to describe the overly ambitious...apparently though, the use of this word is pervasive.

Curious to know everyones feelings on "gunners" and whether or not they are secretly loathed like they were at my alma mater (Virginia)?
