Entering an Au.D. program this fall. I have shadowed some Au.D.'s and read a lot about the profession. In terms of the relationship with Otolaryngologists I have heard two distinctly different things. One opinion that I have heard is that some have an aversion to Au.D's using their "Dr." title and other ENT's embrace it because they feel it improves the overall quality of their practice. I know that I will definitely be using the Dr. title as I would have earned it! I would just clarify to patients who need it that I am a "doctor of audiology." Anyone on here have experience with this title recognition-ENT relationship issue.

You would refer to MDs as Physicians; and yourself as Doctor of Audiology.

audstudent,

"You would refer to MDs as Physicians; and yourself as Doctor of Audiology.06-03-2007 01:57 PM"

Thank you for your reply.
I understand that! That is obvious-- lol I just want some people to respond who has had personal experience in this area positive and negative and how they dealt with it.....

thanks

It's not uncommon for AuD's to go by Dr. XXXX if you're in a strictly clinical setting where you won't be confused as a physician (e.g. private practice not in an ENT's office).

When you're in a medical setting (e.g. ENT office), it's better to introduce yourself in a way that won't confuse the patient into thinking you're a physician. Misrepresentation is bad for business and unethical to boot.

That said, you still have the right to wear a name tag that says Jane (or John) Doe, AuD, Doctor of Audiology.

Audiologists feel slighted by the introduction of the Au.D. Their masters was good enough, but feel it is no longer. Further, they feel inadequate because of the fact the newbies are called "doctor". Think of how you would feel in their shoes. It is only natural. Such will be the case until all the masters program grads retire or die out...just like everything else, it's an adjustment. People don't like change, particularly when they're on the short end of the stick.

If you work in a retail, private practice, or educational setting then feel free to call yourself Dr. as much as you'd like. However, if you work in an ENT office, chances are that ENT is a partner/owner and they are the boss. Depending on their personality, blatantly pissing them off may cause you to be searching for a new job. Of course some ENTs won't care and actually respect audiology. Working in a large hospital, they would not be the owner and may not have a say. Simply obtaining a doctorate does not mean you should be called doctor. Personally, I feel the AuD (at least at my university) is a joke. I know there are better programs out there but I have met many students from these programs and been somewhat disappointed that they weren't necessarily better educated. I'm afraid this profession has fallen to "credential creep" just like pharmacy, physical therapy, and nursing 🙁 The truth is we are a masters-level profession masquerading as doctors. Had the undergraduate curriculum been appropriately restructured, a revamped masters program would have served our field fine. Notice other countries (UK, Canada, Australia) have not followed suit with the AuD movement.

You can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it. If I have the title of, 'Dr.', I will flaunt it for all to see. I also intend to wear a sleeveless to work.

Amen, brother! I attended a conference where many supervisors (university and employment) felt that some students were not equipped and/or competent to handle some settings upon graduation. Why don't they have very intense comm. disorders undergraduate programs? Do I really need to take a humanities class, when that could be replaced with a fluency, or undergrad practicum?

At least this troll got in.

It is unfortunate that you feel the need to be insulting. In any case, it does appear that we have a high propensity of having to work together for the next four years. That being the case, let's try to play nice in the sandbox. Burning bridges, particularly burning said bridges a long way before you're even at the river, is not a good policy. 👍

We all know that you are articulate, have a large vocabulary, no shortage of trivial knowledge, and a unique lifestyle. While you very well may not have the giant ego that it appears you do, you come off as demeaning and presumptuous. But as you suggested, I am willing to play nice in the sandbox. But know that this is an internet forum and I am free to make posts that even I don't take seriously. And if I am insulted, I will likely fire back and flex my e-muscles. 😀 So we can either play nice from this point on or you can use your own time to type up an extremely wordy and witty reply for the sole purpose of making me look stupid in front an online audience. Either way, I will enjoy my Spring Break. 😀

this is heatin' up! I'm gonna go get some popcorn! 😀

Does Dustbug10 speak the truth? Have your say at the "Clearing the air" thread!
