Hi all, just wonder if anybody hear anything from CA programs? I know UCI already sent out their invitations, what about other programs. UC Davis director said that they won't start looking at the appl unitl after Nov 1. How about other programs?
by the way, does any body know anything about Santa Clara Valley med center? How competitive is it? Are they DO friendly? the more info, the more usefule. thank you

i've got prelim medicine invites from UCI and UCSF/fresno... haven't heard anything else from california yet.

I think most of the CA programs wait until Dean's letter (at least for UCLA affiliates).

i believe the UCLA website states that it sends interview offers in mid-late november. i'm assuming that UCSD and UCSF do the same.

Kaiser/SF sent out invites for prelim almost 2 weeks ago and they filled rather fast, as I was originally waitlisted even though I called back about 6 hours after I got the email.

so far, got interviews at scripps green, kaiser santa clara, and ucla-harbor - waiting for the rest.

Amongst California programs, I applied only to UCSF and Stanford, and I got an invite from UCSF last week, which totally made my day. Haven't had a chance to call them yet, though -- Neurology consult service (which is what I'm on now) is really busy!

Scripps Green? They told me they don't review applications until Dean's letter is in. I am also waiting to hear from UCLA affiliates. Strange that I would get an university invite while the community/university affiliated ones are playing dead.

as for UCLA affiliates I got an invitation from Harbor yesterday... that's it though as of now. Good luck to all.

Thanks for your well-wishes. The stat that the folks on these forums love to toss around the most -- Step 1 score -- I actually wouldn't say I did so spectacularly on. I did, however, do a lot of research and got some papers out along the way; my clerkship evals have all been pretty solid, and my letter writers were all attendings/professors whom I knew well and who I'm fairly certain wrote strong letters. I'm sort of talking out of my ass here, but for some reason I just have this feeling that the concept of "stats" doesn't do a whole heck of a lot in the end -- I mean, how many people posting on these boards have 2 bazillion on their Step 1 score, AOA, and all honors in their clerkships? -- to me, it seems like everyone is posting these stats about themselves. But not all of them are going to be granted the same offers, because a stamp of "Ob/Gyn: Honors" on a transcript isn't anywhere nearly as informative as a statement that reads "This student's knowledge is in the top percentile of all students at his school, and we hope that he makes the decision to pursue our field." Who knows -- maybe I'm just trying to justify any potentially weak spots in my application by deluding myself into thinking that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. 😉

As far as interview dates for UCSF, I left the sheet at home, and I can't recall any dates in particular.

Buena suerte to you as well, my friend.

has anyone heard from any other UCLA affiliate?

UCLA-VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Program starts interviews this thursday. 11/6

So far i have recieved interview offers from USC, Kaiser SC, and Drew. Not sure whether to schedule the Drew interview as the hospital lost its surgery and radiology accrediation.

So far I've got 9 CA prelim/transitional interviews- kern county, santa clara prelim, santa clara transitional, huntington memorial, kaiser, USC, Cedars, UCI, UCLA/Olive view. Still waiting on couple of more...

I am wondering if anybody hear from the following categorical programs-huntingtion memorial, loma linda and st. mary long beach. Thanks!

When did you hear from Cedars??

From california:

stanford
ucsf
usc
uci
loma linda
kaiser la

haven't heard from cedars, ucla, or ucsd

mahylo, could you share your stats and other credentials you thought played a role in getting these interviews. I dont mind PMs.

I guess I should explain myself a little more...

these are the programs I have HEARD from... that being said, Stanford and UCSF were DENIALS, while the others were invites...

with that comment, i doubt you care to hear about my stats...

Okay, so has anyone heard from Santa Clara Valley yet? It's hard to imagine they haven't sent out invitations already...

More importantly, why haven't I heard from them yet?!?!😛

Is anyone else seriously considering "dropping a tier" to train in California? More specifically, NORTHERN CA? Who would want to live in LA anyhow???😛

my roommate (categorical IM) heard from them 1-2 weeks ago. i heard from them last friday (prelim IM). i'm guessing they're sending out invites in batches.

invitation to scripps this am...

Bartholomew, i agree 100%. I dont know about dropping a tier, but I would need to speak with my PD considering I am only a 2nd year.

Mahylo, yeah u're right i dont care anymore. 🙁 Sorry for the bad news.

profunda,

If you're considering northern California, there is Stanford, UCSF and Davis then a number of HMO and county programs. Technically these latter programs don't "rank" all too high from what I understand. But I have no doubt you can get a solid education at places like Santa Clara and Ca Pacific Medical.
Santa Clara has Stanford affiliation and Ca Pacific Medical and Alameda have UCSF affiliation/staff.

Dunno, I had no shot at Stanford and UCSF so these are the options that remain. They don't carry any name recognition, as do many of the UCLA affiliates, but they're where I want to be...
I can imagine San Diego being a good place to train, but I'm not an LA kind of person....To each his own.

Talked to the coordinator at Harbor-UCLA today- the interview list has been compiled, but the invitations have not gone out yet. According to her we'll hear by the end of next week.

Yeah it stinks that the northern cali med places are such powerhouses that is so hard to go or go back.

i would love to go to cpmc or valley, but i'm interested in subspec so i want to aim for univ hosp first you know?

profunda,

CPMC offer Gas, Cards, and Pulm. Also, take a look at their fellowship history...You may be surprised. Unfortunately, they don't have the info listed for the past couple years...I still have to find out more about SCV.

Bartholomew, I know about the cpmc fellowship programs. However, I was told doing comm hosp medicine limits one's options in medicine, whereas univ hosp residency in the resume will allow one to have more options in the future. besides, i am also thinking about nephrology, which cpmc doesnt have. i dont mind staying out of sf another 3 yrs if i will have more leeway the rest of my life.

Finally got the Santa Clara Valley interview today. Wonder why it took so long...

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give you the heads up on my interviews from CA programs:

Invited and will attend interview:
Santa Clara Valley
Kaiser Oakland
Kaiser Santa Clara
Cal Pacific
St. Mary's
UC Davis
UCLA
UCLA-Harbor
Cedars
Scripps Mercy

Invited but turned down:
Huntington
Santa Barbara Cottage
St. Mary's Long Beach

Rejected:
Stanford
UCSF (Even after I did a rotation there AND met the program director--bastards; actually after rotating there I realized that everyone is full of themselves, so I didn't want to go there anyway)
UCSD-hadn't heard from them in a while so I decided to phone them and got the denial over the phone...

So my question is, why does UCLA want to interview me, yet I'm getting rejected by UCSD?

Who knows...

😱

When did you call UCSD? Do you know if they are planning on contacting applicants with rejections? Anyone else hear from UCSD - rejection or interview? Thanks all.

I called them this past week. Yes, they are planning on notifying applicants soon. The woman told me that they have started contacting ppl regarding interviews. She said I should expect a formal rejection letter soon.

Snobs...

Received UCSD PRELIM offer last week. Not sure if categoricals are sent out later.

well...ucsd IS sending out categorical interviews. got mine yesterday. Its all random...got UCLA, UCSD, UW but the axe from SF and Stanford. Oh well.😀

Nimboo, looks like you have a particular interest in Northern California. Couple questions...

Why isn't Alameda on your list, while St. Mary's is?
And, do you have any plans for specializing?

Hey Barth,

I am from northern cali so I prefer to do my residency closer to home. I'm not too sure about so cal, but some of the UCLA affiliaes are pretty good (cedars, harbor). I didn't apply to alameda (i'm assuming you're refering to highland) b/c i don't want to work in oaktown. I don't know much about St. Mary's. I kind of blindly applied to a bunch of programs. As for now, I have NO CLUE what i want to do with my life. Sometimes I want to specialize (cards, heme/onc, or endo) and sometimes I want to call it quits after 3 years. I know if i go to a community program I won't have a chance of specializing in cards, but location matters more to me. I also have some interview at top programs in chicago (u of c and northwestern) but I don't think I'm going to rank them ( and i doubt they'd rank me anyway). I'm still surprised UCLA is interviewing me and I highly doubt they're gonna rank me either.
Are you from northern cali as well? Care to enlighten me on some of the programs?

nimboo can u share ur stats and tier/location of your med school and research exp?

Nimboo,

Congradulations on the interviews. If you have received an invitation to interview at a particular institution, then you should by all means feel confident about matching there.

I went to school in N. California, and for me location is more important than name, but fellowship opportunities are also important to me.

Santa Clara Valley and Cal Pacific offer their own fellowships and there does seem to be some reciprocity with their University affiliates. I really doubt getting one would represent a real problem, albeit your choice of location may be limited. But then again, why would you want to leave???

I made that mistake once already...

As for St. Mary's, I've only heard what is posted on Scutwork. It seems St. Mary's is a really small community program and I'd be more concerned about fellowships there. If I recall correctly, UCSF students may rotate there, but I do not believe there is much of a connection otherwise.

PS. I happen to believe the University of Chicago is one of the best universities in the country. It's like one big ass think tank...However, if you've never lived in the midwest or east, beware, winters can be really hard to adjust to. Anyhow...good luck! UCLA...LA...bahhh

Bartholomew. If you went to med school is ncal, it means you could be from stanford, ucsf, or davis. If you are from stanford or ucsf, how come they are not hooking you up with a spot there? I'm assuming you are then from ucdavis? that's a pretty good residency program, plus only 1 hr away from sf if you drive like me.

Bartholomew, sorry about the davis rejection. Do you mind giving your stats, pubs, and tier of med school so I know if I have any chance? Thanks.

Profunda,

I'm sure you'll have a shot. You still have lots of opportunities to strengthen your application. I attend a large midwest university with no reputation, I was in the middle of my class, with overall honors in 2 clerkships and "clinically" honoring 4 of them. My USMLE score was slightly above national mean. No pubs. Some research experience. Strong letters of recommendations. Overall, average numbers with strong clinical showing and letters of recommendation. My perception is that my numbers held me back from Davis. Things may have been different if I were in the top quarter or top third of my class or scored over 230 on USMLE. This is just a guess tho...I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I just thought my clerkship evaluations and letters would speak louder on my behalf...

i don't think santa clara valley med has any fellowships. it's closely affiliated with stanford and is a strong program, but i don't know how many of its residents go on to fellowships at stanford.

i agree that the bay area is definitely tough for those interested in pursuing fellowships. ucsf and stanford are both im giants and very tough to even get interviews. (i'm still hurting from my ucsf rejection) southern california definitely has more academic programs with affiliated fellowships. just in gi, there's ucla, usc, uci, cedars-sinai, ucla-harbor, kaiser-la, ucsd, scripps green, loma linda, etc.

anyone know much about kaiser-la? i'm debating whether or not to do my interview there. i've heard good things about it, in that they save their fellowships for their residents, but not much else.

anyone hear from irvine? they're the last cali program i'm waiting for. i heard it's not even a very good academic program.

Yep, I'm curious to see what the transfer rate from residency to fellowship is with these affiliated programs. Santa Clara Valley, however states they do have "integrated fellowships," whatever that may mean in the long run for its residents...

My understanding is that Urvine isn't very well esteemed. Dunno about Kaiser....

Seem like you guys know northern cali well. Got some interviews coming up, can you elaborate on these. Kaiser santa clara, ucsf/fresno and usc. Im planning on going for fellowship. Went out of state for school but want to come back now.
