Anyone receiving interview invites yet? Any programs in particular?

Also, is there any true logic or superstition which would suggest trying to secure the later interview dates for programs you definitely want to consider highly?

So far, i have been invited for three interviews; however, they are all community-based programs. I would hope to land an academic hospital. Strange thing is that these programs don't even have my letters of recommendation yet or my dean's letter with transcript. makes me kind of suspect, but at the same time, maybe my application isn't that bad after all!

So far I've received 3 interview requests, from academic programs. One average program, two very solid programs. None from my dream programs. My application is only lacking my final LOR though and I submitted it the opening day. I don't think I'm a super stellar applicant (I failed to honor my surgery clerkship, oh my!), but it helps a bit to be early with things. 2/3 programs have offered November interviews which is pretty nice so I can spread things out a bit.

I didn't catch the "late interview is better" thread, but would point out that top-level academic programs tend to interview in January only, so if those are the Programs someone is truly interested in, there isn't much choice but to interview "late".

only one so far U of L and the offered 4 dates 2 in Nov, 1 in Dec, and 1 in Jan. I submitted my app about a week ago so hoping to hear from more soon.

good luck
Richard

I submitted my app about 2-2.5 weeks ago and i have gotten 4 interviews so far. they are all community programs ( 3 have strong univ affiliations), but as someone else mentioned earlier, I am also waiting for some university/academic programs to invite me for an interview. i am an IMG applicant so i have no illusions about the likelihood that this will happen. Aside from being an IMG, my app is strong ( i think). I've gotten good step 1 and step 2 scores (90+ on both), good LOR's, etc., so I guess I am happy with results thus far. I also figure that larger/better university programs will likely not send out interviews so early as they don't really need to, but I could simply be deluding myself with this kind of thinking. Who knows..........

Good luck to you. i hope that the interviews start rolling in for you and me come Oct. 1.

I was getting a little worried too about not having heard from a lot of programs, but so far no one else at my school applying to g-surg has heard from too many programs either. My buddies applying for Anesthesia and Radiology have had interviews rolling in from big time universities. The only University program that has given me an interview is U of Miami. I'm from the midwest so I've been scouring the net to find out more about the program. I would love to hear from anyone that is familiar with the program. I only applied to two community hospitals because I'm pretty passionate about research and would much rather match at a University program. Both of them have given me interviews.

I guess we all just have to sit tight and check our emails four times daily. 😀

Good luck to everyone:clap:

got another one on friday..............in DC, again a community program, but a large one with affiliations with GW. Looks good to me and i think I am gonna accept the invitation. But I must admit I was a bit surprised to see that they are offering interviews as early as next Friday October 3. Anyone have any advice in terms of WHEN to go to interviews? IS early October too early, or if I go does it show that I am really interested?

yeah, washington hospitals center. i got one too. is it any good?

thats the one. I dont know first hand anything about it, but I talked to a friend of mine who is from Baltimore/DC area and he said that it is a good hospital. He asked around and it has a fairly good reputation from what he tells me.

got 2 interviews so far out of 40. i'm an average applicant for general surgery.

do you think certain places choose not to send interview invitations to people that may be unlikely to attend, stats way above average for their school.

What is the etiquitte for scheduling interviews? Is it bad manners to overbook less competitive programs then cancel them as offers come in from more competitive programs?
When you cancel, do you have to give them a reason?

Thanks,

Topher06

I have received 4 interviews so far; BU, Dartmouth, Rush, Maryland. I submitted my application a few days after the deadline and I feel that I am a competitive applicant at top academic programs. I have absolutely no worries about getting enough interviews even with the fact that less competitive friends of mine have received more interviews thus far. One piece of advice I have heard is to schedule intervies at "lower tier" programs earlier so you are more polished for the better/"top tier"/desireable programs.

As far as cancelling interviews...I think everyone does this. You should reply to invitations quickly as the interview offers come in b/c you might miss out on your desired date if you don't. Then if you later get more offers you'd rather attend at that time, cancel as soon as you know.

As long as you cancel EARLY, as soon as you know, you will leave that date available for them to book someone else. It is very poor form to just not show up for an interview without canceling - people did this to some of the January interviews I attended and I think it is rude and you never know who knows who amongst these programs - you'd hate for the chairman of your #1 to bump you down the rank list b/c chairman of your no-show program happens to be his best friend and you made yourself look bad by not showing up for a scheduled interveiw without canceling. On the other hand, I think cancelling in a timely manner is OK. No you don't have to give them a reason unless you want to.

in response to jc - you only really need 2-3 interviews before you feel comfortable with it, so after 2-3 of your lower-teir, you can start booking your top choices. If you leave the top choices till last you may be kinda bunrt-out. Most people reach that burnout point around the 10th interview it seems, so try to peak in the middle of the interveiw season with the top choices in the middle. I scheduled the ones I wasnt' too interested in, in late January, so I had plenty of time to cancel if I decided I booked enough places I liked by mid-December. This is when the interveiw invites slow down and you should have a firm handle on your schedule by mid-december.

That's pretty much what I figured. I've gotten offers from a lot of lower tier programs already and didn't want to let the slots fill up while waiting on more competitive interviews.
From what I've heard the program directors do talk and it will get around if you don't cancel or cancel the day of.

So far ...UMiami, Wayne State/DMC, Mayo MN, and a local community program. I'm still waiting on a majority of the programs (I applied to about 30) to get back to me. Nearly all the programs I applied to are big universities. I'm still a little on edge because I really want to match somewhere with strong research. I have slightly above average grades and scores with a lot of basic science and clinical research in surgery without taking any time off from medschool. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone!

Fubar/Sacajaweha,

In terms of clinical volume and surgical experience the Washington Hospital Center is the best program in the DC area (not including Walter Reed). As a resident you are in the OR from day one as an intern and the residents graduate with an impressive number of cases.

One of the drawbacks is that although they have one of the best heart programs in the country, they use surgical PA's and residents never rotate through cardiac surgery. This is something you should be aware of if you are interested in a CT fellowship. That being said, about 1-2 chief residents match in CT fellowships every year from WHC. Two of my cointerns matched in CT fellowships in 2001 - one went to UMDMJ and one went to the Cleveland Clinic.

Good luck on your interviews,

Pheo

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions about the residency program at penn state?

Perhaps our esteemed moderator can enlighten us here.

Thanks.

I also want to know about the Penn state program. i have heard mixed things, so if anyone has any info please post......

Pheo, thanks for the info on Wash Hosp Center. I had my interview on Friday and I was thoroughly impressed. It seems like a great program, with lots of OR time . But the thing that impressed me most about the program is that the residents are generally very happy. they are happy with the program, get along well with each other (including between upper and lower level residents), and are well taken care of. Even though it was my first interview, i will be honest in saying that I would have signed on the dotted line if they had offered me a spot right then and there. i will be ranking it very highly and definitely plan on going back for a second look when I have time.

I really liked Penn State when I interviewed there last year. Seemed like a strong program, where graduates go onto various fellowhips in many fields, people seemed happy, and attendings seemed very approachable.

Why I didn't rank it higher than I did: location in kinda the middle of nowhere. Harrisburg isn't much of a city, and philly is a long drive. If you are single and like small towns or have a spouse who does not work or could be happy/able to find work in a relatively small town, it could be great.

If you interview there, be sure to drive by the chocolate factory - the streets literally smell like chocolate within a 1/4 mile of the place - pretty tempting!!

I appreciate your input! It's good to know that is a decent program. I hadn't heard anything about it, and it helps to have some info about the program.

As for geography, the size of Hershey was a concern for me also as I was raised in LA and am used to big city life. But I guess that shouldnt preclude an interview to the place to see what it's like. Honestly, the program and how happy the current residents are is more important to me than location.

I will definitely have to hit the chocolate factory...........being a bonified chocoholic obligates me to do so.

Interviews ...so far
University of Minnesota,Virginia, Saint Louis University, Arkansas, West Virginia, Medical college of Georgia, and Maine.
What is up with the west coast. I applied East to west, and the dirty south. So far the west and mountains have given me no love. Has anyone else heard from the Western states?
😉

As for the west coast, Oregon sent a little DVD package out recently stating that they don't send out interview invitations until the Dean's letter is released. Otherwise, there hasn't been much response from the west coast.

Out of curiosity, when did you hear from Virginia? Is that for VCU/MCV or Virgina in Charlottesville? Sounds like you have some good places on your list that you have heard from.

Best of Luck to all those enduring this game called residency application.

So Far:

UNC
Dartmoth
Louisville
Ohio State
Cincinnati 🙂
Cornell
and a community program affiliated with Cornell that I accidentally applied to (See my thread "I am Dumb")...

Mango, your list looks similar to mine. Perhaps our paths may cross this winter...

Anybody hear anything from the "top tier" programs yet, or are they primarily waiting until the dean's letter is released on November 1st? Anybody get the "long and most medial finger" from any programs yet?

Again, best of luck to all in this "crap"shoot. 😀

I've heard from 11 so far: New York Medical College, Med Coll Virginia, UMKC, U of Illinois, Wake Forest, and about 6 other smaller community-univ affiliated programs. Hope they keep rollin' in for everyone!

Heard from Michigan, Parkland, Cornell, and Mayo (Scottsdale). Waiting for more. Anybody with info on Mayo Scottsdale.

Anybody know anything about Baylor Dallas? I know that it used to be affiliated with Baylor Medical school but not anymore. Also anything on San Antonio? I have interviews from both but have only reviewed their web sites.

I have heard that Baylor Dallas is an excellent training program. I was advised by my school's program director to consider applying there as I was already applying to UTSW in Dallas.

I am also going to San Antonio on my Texas swing and have heard from my program director that they have been unstable at times in the past and that they do not currently have a chair. I don't know a whole lot more than what he has said. I have heard that it is a great place to live with readily affordable housing though.

Anyone go to ACS? Any good schtuff there? Did anybody's interview invites take a slow turn possibly due to all of the important folks being gone in attendance to the ACS?

Keep the interview invites rolling and best of luck to all of the g-surg applicants this year.😎

Utah doesn't send invitations until after the Dean's letter comes out. (It's a great program, btw.)

Anybody else recently get the email from Virginia about the supplement to the application. Am I a jackass that completely overlooked this simple form that I should have known about, or did this form come as a surprise to anybody else?

Just wondering. Anybody know of any other programs that have this kind of covert form? Hopefully I am not waiting for other offers only to find out that there is some additional form needed.

Go Celtics! Especially now that the RedSox folded!

I got the stupid thing and it almost made me want to withdrawal my application. Why do they care where I went to high school or what my college GPA was?

I actually am going to withdraw my application because of that supplement. I think its corny to want my SAT scores and my leadership since HIGH SCHOOL! Not my type of place.

No kidding? When I saw they were asking for highschool stuff, I had to do a double take as I thought to myself "holy schitt!" High school was long ago and how does this help them evaluate me more completely.

I have also thought about withdrawing my application because it is just an additional pain directly in the a$$ that I just don't feel like filling out. Who knows, maybe I'll have a change of heart.

Fight the Power. Do the Right Thing.

As an aside, if you have seen SUCCESSORIES posters, www.despair.com has some great posters mocking them.

Best wishes to all!😳

I did the supplemental application for UVA when I was going through the application process last year. I thought it was pretty corny as well, but was really glad I had taken the time to do it. UVA is a great place. I ranked it second and would have been very happy had I matched there.

What do you guys know about Utah? I'm intrigued, but haven't heard much. I like the idea of no fellows, though.

I withdrew my application to UVA after I got that secondary. As an older student, High school was a long time ago and completely irrelevant to my life now. Heck, I can't even remember what my SAT scores were. I don't want to be at any place that thinks what I did or didn't do 20 years ago should have any importance today.

"Another Festivus Miracle!" The "dean's letter" is out of the box and hopefully this will get the schitt rolling.

Oregon appears to be on the ball! Deans letter out today and already getting a friendly invite.

Hopefully this little dean's letter issue will help open the flood gates for everyone who has been anxiously waiting.

I was a med student at Utah, now a surgery resident in another state. Utah's surgery program is very tough, but excellent. You operate a ton from day one (none of this "Interns don't operate" BS that you get at other programs). The only fellows are CT and Vascular, which really doesn't seem to interfere w/case levels and numbers. There is less of an emphasis on research than at most other University programs, but you can do research if you want to. The Utah residents get lots of good experience in just about everything except Thoracic and maybe Head and Neck. The pediatric hospital is one of the best in the country, high volume and complexity (and no fellows to swipe the CDH repair from you). Utah also has an excellent burn ICU, is building a brand new Surgical Critical Care pavillion and is located right in the foothills. The chairman is still fairly new (started when I was an M4), but really great. The private hospital affiliated with the program is also a Level 1 trauma center and the surgeons there are quite talented as well as great teachers. Those rotations are like surgery camp, where you operate your brains out. The program encourages resident independence, but you are adequately supervised and staff are overall very helpful and available. Residents have had no problems getting great fellowships. Program specifics aside, Salt Lake City is a great place to live, especially if you are into outdoor activities. Skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, etc, are all nearby, and most of the residents (and staff) are active, outdoors people. I left because I felt like I needed to "go to grow," but in retrospect, if given the chance to go through the Match again, I would have stayed.
* end of prolific gushing about the program*

If anyone has additional questions about Utah or SLC, feel free to PM me.

You should submit the UVA supplemental application ASAP. You're application won't be complete until its in.

My interview invite list:
1. UF Gainesville
2. UT Houston
3. UT San Antonio
4. Albert Einstein
5. Stony Brook
6. Temple
7. Ochsner's
8. Sound Shore/NYMC
9. Our Lady of Mercy/NYMC
10. New York Hospital of Queens/Cornell

Looking forward to hearing back from more programs now that the Dean's letter is out.

One surprising thing about the Vagin...errrr...Virginia application was the fact they asked for SAT scores but didn't ask about MCAT scores and break down.😎

anyone interested in the california programs? whats the word on these programs out there? what about stability and chairman?
