Hi all,
I would like to hear your opinion on what is appropriate for the interview in terms of jewelry, nails, and perfume. I once spoke with a member of the selection committee and they said that they didn't like it when someone wore jewelry no matter how conservative.

No perfume, or cologne for guys. Last thing you want to do is cause an AdCom to have an allergy attack!

I'll be wearing my two bracelets and ring I never take off but the bracelets won't be visible under my jacket. I usually do a clear coat of nail strengthener for things like this since it's not the time or place to get edgy with purple or black nail polish. Plus manicures last about .2 seconds at the barn anyway. I'm treating it the same as I would any other important interview. Look neat, organized and professional and you'll be fine.

Last thing I heard about jewelry is nothing flashy and nothing you'll find distracting/fidget with. So if, for instance, you have a ring and like to twist it around your finger when nervous, take it off.

If you play with jewelery, absentmindedly, when nervous (aka MYSELF) don't wear it! As for nails, I personally feel that for MOST interviews, a french (no color) nail should be fine. However, this is vet school, so maybe not since you don't want to seem like (and I hate that it is like this, but it is) you are too girly and can't get blood on you/stick your hand up a cows butt/deal with bacteria. I dunno, thats what the pre-health adviser says for all pre-heath people at my school.

Ooo..good point. I have a bad habit of doing that. And when it comes to earrings, I wouldn't wear anything dangling or distracting.

I think nails should be completely natural and be sure they are cut short. None of the fake nonsense! Also as far as perfume goes, I would stick to just deodorant. You want the interview to be about you and your interviewers should not be distracted by the gigantic ring on your finger or odd necklace. I would go with nothing except like wedding bands.

If it matters at all, I prefer pale pink/natural tone to the french look... You should be fine with it I think since it is still quite conservative. I'll go that route if I have an interview someday!

I have long nails naturally - that's how I like them. I had them while doing farm stuff, I had them at the lab, and I have them now at the clinic. Nothing wrong there. Pale pink is fine, clear/french is fine, plain is fine. Lime green is not, foot long acrylics are not. 🙂

Just don't try and "pretty up" for the interview - it's not a date. Otherwise you'll be fine.

What do you guys think about ear piercings for interview? I've been researching professional dress and have read that no more than one earring per ear is best. I have two ear lobe piercings per ear, and a tragus piercing (like this: http://paulinaholmgren.blogg.se/images/2008/tragus_21892270.jpg) on my right ear. I think small studs in both of the lobe piercings will look fine, but I'm debating whether I should take out the ring in my tragus piercing. It is a silver ring with a small silver captive ball, so not super loud or anything. I've only had the piercing for six months and I've never taken out the earring, so I'm a little worried about getting it back in. Anyone have thoughts on whether this would be OK for interviews?

I doubt anybody would even notice a tragus piercing. If you're really worried about it, have the ring changed to a short barbell (or even more comfortable, a short labret stud) with a tiny ball on it. Since its only 6 months old, and cartilage piercings take forever to heal, I wouldn't just take it out for the interview if you want to get it back in without it closing up or being really sore for a few weeks afterwards.

You'll be fine. I have two lobe piercings and didn't wear earrings in them, but I have a tragus piercing, an inner conch piercing, and a cartilage piercing in each ear that I did not take out. I had two interviews, and got accepted at both schools with never a mention of my earrings.

There are MANY people in my class right now with multiple ear piercings and even some nose and lip-area piercings that they left in for their interviews, and none of them had any issues with it. I would leave them in myself, as well, just so long as the jewelry isn't loud or obnoxiously distracting.

As for the actual question at hand, I went with a pair small-ish earrings, a dainty necklace, and the two rings that I never take off (not of the engagement/wedding kind), and I was fine, as well. I did keep my nails bare and short, though, because I was wearing a skirt suit and I didn't want them to get the feeling that I had no idea that, in interviewing, I was asking to be covered in blood, urine, vomit, and diarrhea lol. As long as you keep it professional and somewhat natural looking, I don't think polish will hurt you, though.

Basically, just don't let whatever you're wearing take the attention off of you as an applicant, and you'll be fine.

Yeah I didn't get the earring memo before my interview and I just got a pair of cat dangly earrings that I wore. They weren't too flashy or big, but they were hanging type earrings. I also wore my hair down so who knows if they even saw them.

I have a helix and an industrial (both silver) and left them in for my interviews - got into 2 schools, so I wouldn't worry too much. Just don't do anything too huge/conspicuous.

Hmm... my OSU interview is tomorrow 🙂scared🙂. I was planning on taking my nose stud out (it's a tiny pink gemstone that honestly tends to blend in with my skin tone anyway), but the hole will still be visible so I was debating over whether taking it out would actually accomplish anything. I've had the piercing for almost 5 years so I'm not too worried about it closing up, but I AM worried about losing the actual stud while it's not in my face (stupid, I know) and the potential for an obvious hole in my nose looking weirder than the actual stud... perhaps I'll reconsider. That sounds like it would be really tasteful, actually, so I would definitely consider leaving it in and keeping your peace of mind.

I'm keeping both ear piercings in (on the lobe) because I never take them out. Tiny little diamond studs... I don't see how it would bother anyone. Easy to notice, though, as I have short (pixie-ish) hair. Eh... I have more important things to worry about.

Honestly, if you are applying in the south, you might consider covering up tattoos or taking out piercings because people are MUCH more conservative than those people in the western states (like colorado or california). I can tell you from experience living in the south my entire life, that people tend to be somewhat judgmental in those areas. I wouldn't worry so much about it if you are applying out of the south though. Just trying to help!

I wore jewelry and perfume to both of my interviews and still got in. Plus, one of those interviews was in Texas, which is about as South as it gets. I'm glad I didn't read this thread until just now! I would have been freaking out.
