I hear you about waiting for the dean's office. All it took were a couple of hurricanes to slow ours down! 😳 🙄
Gainesville came through alright. According to the local news, up to 70% of GRU customers (local power company) were without power yesterday (I question this statistic), but nearly all were restored by last night. Mostly lots and lots of rain, with frequent gusts on Sunday. A couple of big trees over in almost all neighborhoods. Despite excellent drainage, water is still backing up. I don't think any structures received threatening damage. It's still raining.
The city (and state) were holed up from Thursday night until Today. This is as close to cabin fever as you get in Florida. By this afternoon, cleanup crews had made significant progress; streets were drivable, trees cleared away, Smoothie King open...business returning to normal.
I appreciate the concern from you all! This is the absolute worst weather Gainesville gets, and it's not that bad. You stock up on canned beans, pink stuff (Charlie caused a lot of diarrheal stuff afterwards) and Poptarts, keep a stock of candles available (which my wife likes anyway), make your freezer/fridge a bit colder, bring in the plants and flyables from outside, make sure to stop by Blockbuster, move your car out from the trees, cuddle up with that special someone and watch the wind blow! We were obviously more fortunate than those south and coastal of us.
