I know that typically interviews are from October-January (shorter seasons for some programs). I am wondering which months are best for me to take off for interviews. Our blocks are not strictly October=Oct 1-30 but I want to maximize my availability during elective season.

So out of these 4 blocks, which 3 should I take off for interviews? Which ones are the most crucial? I am probably a middle of the road US MD candidate.
September 24-Oct 19
Oct 22-Nov 16
Nov 10-Dec 14
Jan 2- Jan 25

Congrats to everyone who learned they matched today/that they filled their residency programs 🙂 Good luck to those in the SOAP!

The middle two will have the highest density of interviews. I'd probably also take the last one but either will likely work. Some programs start in the end of Oct, some go into mid to late jan, but almost none span ALL that time.

Similar response here. Most definitely take the middle two options. Most likely shouldn't matter when choosing between the remaining two options, just pick your favorite time to be traveling. I personally didn't want to schedule much super early in the season, because it makes it harder to coordinate interviews with other programs in the area, particularly if you have a wide geographic area you're considering. My earliest was Halloween, and my only interview extending into January was my home institution because travel was simple, and I don't recall ever wishing I had more time to schedule interviews. (edit: though I was frequently wishing I didn't have to expend the mental energies planning and rearranging travel plans - that part is likely inevitable if you have more than a couple of interviews).

I had 6 interviews before November, so you can certainly start earlier. My interview season was Oct. 13-Dec 8. I had 6 interviews within 1 week of the ERAS submission date and decided to schedule them early in case I got more interviews later in the season (wanted to make sure I had plenty of dates open, as I heard some people say they had to turn down interviews because they didn't have the dates open).

Plenty of people interview in Dec, but from people I talked to the "heavy" season was end of Oct- mid Dec. So like people already said, middle 2 rotations you listed are the money season.

Yep, I agree with the middle two. As for the first vs. the fourth, I would choose the fourth in case you get some late interviews due to updates to your application, LoIs or calls/emails from your advisers. Plus, it is typically easier to schedule interviews later than earlier, as earlier dates fill up faster.

Also, of the programs I applied to almost all *started* interviewing mid-October, so the first block of time wouldn't work for me at all.

A couple of other considerations:
1) Check out websites of the programs you're applying to. Some number of them will give you the time period during which they interview, plus days of the week they interview (which is somewhat useful when planning interviews in the same city/region).
2) It appears to me that programs tend to start with inviting people with highest stats before they go down the list to more average stats. In which case, if your stats are not that high I would rather choose the fourth option over the first one, as you don't know if you're going to get early invites, and even if you do you can always schedule interviews later.
Case in point: I believe myself to be a fairly strong applicant (strong overall clinical performance on core rotations and sub-Is that I did in advance of ERAS submission, strong letters from psychiatry and medicine, proven long term interest in psychiatry, unique/interesting psychiatry related ECs that required significant time commitment, research up the wazoo, interesting/unique personal story, relatively highly ranked in my class, coming from a top school etc) BUT I didn't get honors in psychiatry and my Steps scores were fine but not terribly impressive. So I ended up getting a good number of interviews from very strong/top programs and I'm happy with my inerview cycle overall, BUT I did get quite nervous in the beginning of the interview cycle, as I got many of my invites later than people who reported getting invites from the same programs here on SDN. I believe that's because it's simply easier for programs to start inviting people with higher stats first before they go down the list where they actually have to read the applications to see who stands out.
Bottom line is: I believe it's "safer" to choose a later time period for interviews because you don't know if you're going to get early invites, and even if you do you can always schedule later interviews.

Three years ago, I believe my very first possible interview date was around Oct 19 and I scheduled for Oct 26--or something along those lines. You will definitely not be interviewing in September, although you might not want to schedule a hyper-busy rotation for that time as you want to be able to reply to interview invites ASAP.
