Hi,

This is my first time applying. This question may have already been covered but I couldn't find the answer. Can anyone describe how a typical interview is like, schedule-wise?

I read that each school has theirs on different days of the week. But I want to know if the interview last a whole day, or just half a day, or less than an hour. Do people usually just fly in the night before, interview the next day, and fly back that same night?

I am just curious since I can't walk off my job for too long. Thanks in advance.

Usually starts around 8-9. From what I can remember, it usually starts with a presentation about the school, followed by actual interviews. Sometimes there are also essays given at this time - therefore some people would be busy getting interviewed while the others would be writing their essays.

Then it's usually my favorite part of the day - lunch.

Finally, it should end with a walkthrough of the dental school itself.

What kind of essays were there and did you expect them before hand?

Some schools make you write essay. I know MWU and ASDOH do that. The interview day lasts around 6-7 hrs. Starts around 9 am depending on the school. I flew in day before interview and left after interview was complete. My interviews were in expensive cities and hotel costs were high. Cheapest around 100/night so I only stayed 1 night. Good luck.

Buffalo also makes you write an essay. They only give 10 min from what i remember, so its not a real "essay". Anyway, the topic changes, but they are not strange or hard topics.

They are not there to make or break you. Usually these essays are just to test whether or not you can express your thoughts clearly.

The actual interview, however, is a totally different story.

At one point, I was told that the main purpose of the essay is to check your handwriting. Not entirely sure if it is true. I did bring a notepad to make a quick outline of my essay so I knew exactly what I wanted to write on the essay form. Bottom line, don't let them stress you out too much.
