Hey guys, I just picked up charcoal and dark navy suits for interviews and have a question about pairing shoes with the navy one.

Would this be formal enough?

paried with these burgundy shoes...

Here are the links to the suit and shoes since the pictures are a bit small:

I already have a similar pair of black shoes that will work for both suits, and I know the navy suit/black shoe combination is proper, but it's just not my favorite look. Thanks for any feedback!

I think a pair of black shoes would be a better choice. At least from what I've heard, a dark suit + brown shoes combo is kind of a fashion faux pas.

burgundy is not brown. burgundy shoes go very well with a navy suit

Be the most well dressed person in the room so dress like Don Draper would.

Don't forget the napkin in your front chest pocket! 😎

Well the jury is fairly split, but I'm leaning toward playing it safe with black shoes.

Does anybody have an opinion on whether that particular style of shoe is classic/formal enough (in either color) for interviews?

Stacker: Emulating Don Draper requires far more cash and hair product than my current situation allows.

Personally, I think that if you like the Burgundy shoes, then go with them. If you put the whole suit on and your attention goes to the shoes or if they kind of stand out more then any other part of the suit, then go with the black. Otherwise, dress how you like and show your style. I think people get into trouble when they try to dress like something they're not. No part of your outfit should stand out, it all should go together well and draw peoples attention to your face, and leave your interviewers with an overall impression of "Wow, he knows how to dress" and not, "Did you see that tie?" Just my thoughts...

Hi,
this is possibly a little random, but i'll go for it...

For my interviews, I've been looking into buying some fabric for my custom suit.

I've found a good price on this: superfine 150s wool cashmere blend (60% cashmere, 35% wool, 5% viscose)

just looking for a second opinion as to whether or not this would be a good suit fabric....

You might want to ask the tailor who will be making your suit. (Unless that person is you, in which case you probably wouldn't be asking SDN for advice). 🙂

Well, I may use the tailor associated with the company selling the fabric and I'm looking for an unbiased answer 🙂

Great material for winter. I'd get a thinner material if interviews are in september, however.

Brown shoes with a black suit might be questionable.

Agreed. The shoes I posted are burgundy (oxblood) and the suit is navy, although in the picture it looks rather black.

I wear oxbloods with navy suits, and black shoes with black suits

Groom your hair as well. Looks nice when a guy has nice hair. If you're bald, shave it and work it.

Is there anything wrong with not bringing a jacket, wearing khakis, and rocking the boat shoes? Is that insufficiently formal?

Interviews in NY: burgundy shoes
Interviews everywhere else: black shoes

😛

If my interview invites were to end today, I would have an easy choice to make, according to your advice. 😀
