Interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I only looked over my transcript to make sure I remember what I talked about. You could always do mock interviews to calm your nerves but don't over rehearse. I have found after all my interviews, that they're really only trying to get to know you more as a person. They have all been conversational and chill!

It's honestly a discussion to see if you'd be a right fit for the school. I would look over your answers to the essays you submitted and any personal statement information. They usually want to know why you got a B in a class, why you're interested in their school, and what leadership/career you see for their institution. I know Indiana, Ohio State, and SUNY want to hear their students will consider a residency in the future, obtain their fellowship, etc.
I would try and be yourself.
Congrats on the interview! You've already overcome the hardest step!

A B?? That's just a bit surprising to me because the GPA requirements for optometry schools are usually within the B range. I'd understand asking about Cs but do they really ask students about anything less than an A?

You're right; what I said was hypothetical. Could have said C, but if it's a really easy class that you got a lower grade in, they'll want to know why.

I only applied to one school and thus only had one interview experience... I was crazy nervous about it and spent so much time making sure I had at least thought about every possible question they could ask. However, the entire interview was easy, conversational, and comfortable. I'm not sure they will ask about a certain grade level (such as B or C), but are more likely to ask if they notice an inconsistency. For example, I have been a really strong student in recent years, but back in 2011, I got an F in a community college course. My interviewer just wanted to know what happened since it seemed out of place - it wasn't a "trick" question or a "gotcha" moment of any kind!

Just be yourself and it will be okay! 🙂 Good luck!

I was wondering how your interviews went?
The interviews went well. I did get into all the schools I have already interviewed for but waiting on the last interview to make my final decision.

Sweet! Glad to hear that! Any advice? What all schools are you thinking about?

I was wondering if anyone has tips on MMI at Berkeley? How many questions are asked and how much time is given for each? I also wanted to ask about the Berkeley interview experience, as everyone comes in on one day.

Just be yourself. I’m sure you’ve heard this million times before but that’s all the interview is about. Getting the interview is the hard part. During interview all they’re looking at is if you can make a conversation or not and what you’ve written in application and essay is true or not.
I applied to SCO, NSU and UABSO. The closed file interview was very laid back. All they asked was why optometry and why this school and something about yourself. For open file, they go over all the pre-requisites.
Last one will be Salus for me which is in two weeks. Have you applied to any of these 4 schools?

True. I am just very shy! I am really good at talking with people but the whole talking about myself isn't my strong suit. Ahh I picture the open file one being really scary!!
Good luck!! I applied to SCO, NSU, and then a few other ones. I did not apply to UABSO or Salus though.
