Interviewer says "don't go DO!"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you have DO interview that said not to go MD??

a PhD interviewer who was really laid back told me their were interviewers at the school, who would not give you a good review if you even mentioned and MD desire. I know it was anecdotal, but was not willing to take the risk.

I think most faculty would tell you they were better than the other option (ie MD vs DO), and mentioning a desire to go the other route would not be well received.

Yeah, it's probably a two edged sword. If you don't know too much about DO and try to spout off and seem really dedicated, they can see right through you, but you also don't want to act too much like you want to attend an MD school. I know at one of my interviews, I was specifically asked about applying to MD schools and I explained that I did, and that it was simply an attempt to maximize my chances of becoming a physician. They had no problems with it.

This. Read the following and couldn't agree more:

"Why did you apply to MD and DO schools?"

"Because I care about becoming a physician, not the two initials after my name"

Besides, individual schools foster different atmospheres. I'd think it'd be more logical to base your decision on how comfortable you'd feel at a particular school/program and whether it would help you achieve your personal goals or not.

When having the whole MD vs. DO debate where do Caribbean schools fall in the mix? I have heard many different things from professors, counselors, and colleagues.

Any thoughts on that or experiences with this here?

In my brain:

US MD = US DO >>>> Caribbean MD

In a program directors brain (ACGME)

US MD > US DO >>> Caribbean MD

In a pre-allo's brain:

Who cares ... they are nuts!

Essentially, the biggest problem with a Caribbean school is that there is a significant chance of not landing a residency. If you don't, you can't practice, and you're in trouble.

By the way ... how the hell did you snag that name??? I'm shocked that it wasn't taken like a second after the show premiered??

OK, yeah. I've mostly thought about it the same way you do.
I've just been engaged in discussions with some people who would rather go Caribbean than DO. Which is cool I guess, but the risk you mentioned is rather large and the first year class total is 300+ on average if I'm not mistaken.

As for the name...I guess I got lucky. Someone already had "HouseMD" so I put a space in between and voila! I was able to register with it!

P.S.-If anyone is interested in chatting with a practicing DO you can go to this website look through the Mentors available and request one or more mentors. I found one and have been emailing him. He's been a great help with regard to clarifying the stereotypes out there about DO vs. MD and what life as a DO student and practicing physician is really like.

Check it out if you want to:

The people who say to go Caribbean over DO are fixated on the degree and aren't aware of the bigger issues at hand, and how 20 years down the road ... a better chance at a residency was far more important than getting a singular different letter.
