I'm a med student in new york city applying for residency. Like most people I know here, I want to stay in new york. So far things aren't going badly and I'm getting interviews. But I realized that all of the interviews I have been offered are new york city places. This isn't really a problem, since this is where I want to be anyway, but I'm wondering why I don't have interviews from some of the other places. It's not that the places outside of NYC are better than the places I've already received interviews. Do the programs not send invites if they think that you won't move to that location?

Unless you put something stupid like, "I will never leave New York," in your personal statement how would any program know you won't move 😕 ?

although I'm from the West Coast, I am applying to the 4 big GS programs in NYC and have gotten offers from 3/4, despite the fact that I've heard east coast programs assume a west coaster would never move that far. Contrarily, I've heard from almost none of my West Coast programs. SOOO...i think it's more just a matter of the big city boys getting it done more quickly. Mt. Sinai was my first interview request, whereas I got emails from both Stanford and Oregon that said they don't even look at applications till after the Dean's letter.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that I wrote that. Damn, why didn't someone tell me that would be a problem?

But seriously, from what I have seen, med students in NYC applying for surgery residencies do not want to leave - it seems like we all want to stay here, except for the few people who grew up very far away and want to go back. And PDs must know that. I don't even have to say in my PS that I want to stay in NYC, it will probably be assumed.

Ah, you are probably right. I have received that email from Stanford twice now. I guess I'm just being paranoid. 🙂

and what are the important differences between the two einstein programs in nyc (and bronx)? is one stronger in a different field than the other? thoughts?

The manhattan one (altho in a much more desirable area) is academically not as strong and the residents not as happy as those in Albert Einstein-Bronx, which seems pretty solid. AE Bronx has a pretty good rep as far as I've heard. That's all I've heard/know.

I'm from the midwest, and doing really well on the West Coast interview-wise, but almost nothing in NY. It is really SO RANDOM.
