Intraoperative monotoring future

What do you think the future of intraoperative monotoring will be? Will reimbursement be adequate?

To my knowledge there are no current fellowships in intraoperatie monotoring, so I assume you would have be trained in a fellowship that offers adequate exposure in their clinical neurophysiology fellowship.

Any programs in Cali offere this training?

IOM may be in very high demand in a few years as there is talk of limiting how many cases one physician can monitor at a time, driving up the need for IOM trained neurologists. Many physicians practice with IOM as a significant part of their practice, but those usually are also expected to perform inpatient electrophysiology studies such as EMGs, evoked potential, ENGs if you can find such an opportunity.

I am not aware of any dedicated IOM fellowships, it is usually bundled into neurophysiology and/or epilepsy fellowships. You have to look at program curriculum. Some programs let you chose your focuses between EEG, EMG, Sleep and/or IOM. Some have more standardized curriculum due to coverage needs and give you less choice. Given the need for more IOM, I suspect most programs where IOM is performed will expect fellows to be trained so they ave adequate case coverage given the expected changes.

As far as California, I would look at the AAN fellowship listings site, which has links to most of the programs to get program specifics.
