I was browsing through the UTSW website and saw that they had a month at the beginning of PGY2 for intro stuff:

The first month is an introduction to Neurology without major clinical responsibilities. Residents attend small group review sessions of neuroembryology, neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, and neuroradiology. They also get detailed training in performing the general and subspecialty neurological history and examination, training in common neurology procedures, and the basics of clinical neurophysiology. The rest of the first month is a series of clinical experiences interacting with many of the faculty in subspecialty and general outpatient neurology clinics and ER.

Anyone know of other programs that have a "get your feet wet/so we're all on the same page..." period that is similar to this? I know some of you will be tempted to say "yeah, it's called med school" 😉

Yeah I thought this was a really cool idea and very nice way to get your feet wet in neuro before starting in the wards. UPitt has one as stated above but havent found other schools that do.

I am surprised that this isn't more standard amongst programs.

I see that on closer inspection, the Physicanship rotation is offered during the R1 year at UCSF. But, 33% of the R1's (current class) will be doing their intern year outside of UCSF. How do those folks get to cover that material? Do they just take a one month away elective during their intern year and go to UCSF?

Also, anyone else notice any additional programs that offer an intro rotation?

Didnt wash u have an intro 2 week rotation?

Mayo, MN also discussed this type of early on refresher at the start of the PGY2 year as well.

indeed, i wish programs had this---im getting a little scared about the transition next year...dun dun dunnnn

Some programs have a month of Neuro during the prelim year in which you get used to the neuro wards but as a medicine intern. I believe UT Austin and Duke have this.

Any updates regarding this from other programs, anyone anyone?

Duke's first three months of PGY-2 year are with "senior supervision", where you are on call with a senior resident who, in theory, helps show you the ropes. I haven't experienced it yet, so i can't shed any light on if it is more than an interview talking point. This was a unique aspect of Duke that I did not encounter at other institutions.

CASE has a 3 month period where juniors are supervised by seniors in-house & the seniors end up writing notes on all patients seen by the junior. At the VA, this is done for 2 months. Besides there is back up call 5 days a week with the senior staying in till 10pm & the nightfloat taking over after 10pm for all consults & admissions throughout the year. The only night which the junior is doing a 24hr call alone is Fri (as the Nightfloat gets 2 days off & there is no senior cover for that night. Sat the senior stays in for 24hrs to help out).
