Does anyone have any recommendations on Introductory Anesthesiology books I could grab at Barnes&Noble/Borders/BooksAMillion? Nothing like a textbook or something expensive. If you have any recommendations, do share. Thanks.

As a first book I would recommend Anesthesia Secrets. I don't know that you can find it at the store but they definitely have it online.

Baby Miller (Basics of Anesthesia) is a great beginning book. Anesthesia Secrets does not give enough basic knowledge on the topics in my opinion.

I would suggest Morgan and Mikhail. Read the first 16 chapters. If that is too much read the pharm section. I started to read this book before I started residency. I am now an attending and I still find it helpful.

I have the secrets book but I don't like it.I did not open it before my boards. M & M is sooooooooo well written. It is an easy read. If you are a med student Baby Miller may be helpful also.

I realize that you do not want to read a textbook but I think that what I suggested is a better use of your time. Learn a limited topic in anesthesia well. The very basics. That will serve you well later.

The most readable best anesthesia text I have read is Yao and Artusios board review.

M&M/Lange Clinical Anesthesiology, Miller's Basics of Anesthesia, and Anesthesia Secrets are all good choices. The first two certainly are textbooks though shorter and less detailed, geared toward MS4s, CRNAs, AAs, etc. "Secrets" is anesthesia's response to "Surgical Recall" - meaning you have to know some stuff for it to be valuable but once that's done it's really useful.

If you're starting completely from scratch - I think Miller's Basics of Anesthesia (aka "Baby Miller") is the only choice.

This is great everyone! Thanks for all the recommendations! I cannot wait to check all these books out. 😀

Those books are all good, but beyond a pre-med reading list.
The most basic little primer book I know of is "How To Survive In Anaesthesia" by Robinson and Hall. Even it may assume more background knowledge than a premed has, but it is a lot more basic than the books above yet gives you a decent idea of what types of things anesthesiologists need to know.

I disagree. Baby Miller is for M-4s. M and M packs a big punch. It was my main text throughout residency. It has much more detail than Baby Miller. I started reading it with no anesthesia training. I strated with the third edition and switched to the fouth edition when it came out. I read it several times during my residency. The regional section was very helpful. The fluid section was on the money. The electrolyte section was good too. Section 4 of the book is similar to Anesthesia and Coexisting diseses. This bookgot me through.

I still use M and M but I am also reading The Little ICU Book. This is by the author of The ICU Book but it is smaller.

so you're a premed looking to read about anesthesiology? What are your career goals?

M and M packs a big punch.

I think M&M is a POS it's a book for CRNA's: it just states fact with no physio or physio-path to back it up. Ok to begin with but way to shallow for my taste. On the positive side it's an easy read, Miller et al not so much so.

Isn't M&M what CRNA and AA training programs use as their "definitive" texts?

No . M&M is not the definitive text, Miller and Barash are. M&M is just an easier read, as pointed out.

Thanks everyone again! I'm going to be looking up these books for the next few days. Again, thanks for all these recommendations.

Am I the only one who read the OP's question?

I don't want to be a doctor/anesthesiologist. I am going to apply to AA school (Anesthesiology Assistant) which is a Masters program in Anesthesiology. I just put Pre-Med because technically the program is part of the school of medicine and I haven't been accepted...yet.

I would suggest Morgan and Mikhail.

Morgan and Mikhail can be downloaded for free. So far it has been a pretty good text book-- good for your 1st anesthesiology rotation or for AA school. I thought the section on the anesthesia machines was great.

PerolaNegra,
Do some google searching for :

Clinical Anesthesiology, 4th Edition
G. Edward Morgan, Jr., Maged S. Mikhail, Michael J. Murray

I can't remember the web site but there is some anesthesiologist who put this book online for free. Send me a PM if you can't find it and I'll try to email it to you and anyone else that wants it.

I don't care.

So...a textbook then? Maybe we can get a Miller vs. Barash debate going. 😀

Sixty dollars is not a lot for a book. Buy the book and don't steal it. It is a shame that someone put the book on the net.

Here is a very good introductory book.

Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery
by Barry Friedberg (Editor)

It takes the very simple and makes it seem complex.
Wait, I guess that is opposite of what you wanted. My bad.

It is linked to in the Anesthesiology FAQ along with quite a few other books. However, I don't know anything regarding the legality of it.

Long time lurker here. I rarely post, but this one caught my eye. As a young private practice MD responsible for the med students on their ONE WEEK of anesthesia during their surgical rotation I have to reccomend the NMS Clinical Manual of Anesthesia by Glidden. It is short, well written, and purposely designed as a primer for medical students on their anesthesia rotation. It is also cheap, and fits in the pocket of your scubs. It is from 2002 or 2003, but still serves its purpose remarkably well.

Good Luck
