I am a little confused on this. I always thought TEE is the investigation of choice for any heart valvular issue. However, I also read TTE (Trans thoracic) is correct. On Pg 87, under Mitral Stenosis's diagnostic test, it also says Catheterization is the most accurate for all valcular.

I am all confused with this. Someone please help/clarify. Thanks

If murmur, then echo

TTE is first, becasue it is non invasive
TEE is rarely done, except in cases of infectious endocarditis, not for valvular lesions
Cath gives you pressure gradients across the valve, and so can classify severity

Example: Murmur in the nd intercostal space right sternal border = Aortic Stenosis
1st test = Echo = yes, stenosis, approximate valve area
Best test = Cath = VTI is 0.45, needs to be replaced, and now

Thank you. Appreciate the clarification. Makes better sense now!
