Practicing docs who are not owners or IC:

What all are you using for retirement investment other than an IRA? If a 401k isn’t offered at the office where you are working are you going SEP IRA or what? Technically wouldn’t qualify for solo 401k but I’m curious what all you’re using.
TIA.

I’m a W2 dentist. I max out my Roth 401k and do a backdoor Roth IRA every year. This allows me to take advantage of tax advantaged counts. The remainder is invested in a regular brokerage account. I don’t believe you can set up a SEP IRA as a W2 employee if your employer doesn’t offer it.

I can’t wait to own in large part for the increased availability of tax advantaged investment vehicles.

When I was an associate dentist, I got into rental properties a bit. I believe it real estate investing is something you should implement in your plan. If you are just starting out, buy your personal home with intention to become a good cashflowing rental. After a year, buy another and repeat the process. Also consider an index fund.

Are you able to mega backdoor Roth?

My employer’s 401k plan doesn’t allow in-service withdrawals, so no. I contribute the $23k max to my Roth 401k, get an employer match, and contribute $7k to my Roth IRA via the back door.

The rest is all in a regular brokerage account.

I would strongly recommend using The White Coat Investor as a resource

Great books, incredible podcast. The forum has answers to a lot of questions.
