Anyone from Iowa have any advice on studying for the MPJE? I failed the first time and it seems that just reading the statutes/laws was not enough as the questions were a bit ambiguous and also asked about scenarios not outlined in the law on the BOP website.

I am going to be taking it in the next few months - I haven't worked in iowa in 15 years and then only as an intern - does Iowa have any werid laws that I need to know?

This is off the top of my head, and to look up one very weird law.

Iowa has a very odd sense of the requirements for prescriptions. Read 155A-27 on really carefully and some highlights:

1. Out of state prescriptions that are not from bordering states may be filled even for controls until 2020 (that's a change from 2004). The prescriptions must be legal in the state that they are written.

2. Lots of stuff on e-prescribing that is mandatory for next year, haven't read all the stuff, but I don't work on the front lines.

3. Legend scripts are good for 18 months there for some odd reason.

4. Read the deal on veterinary prescriptions and antibiotics, Iowa has a very odd law on this.

5. The requirements for medication management protocols are restricted to PharmDs or have a BCPS or CGP. (That was asked on the exam.)

Page 22 (Bold is mine):
155A.29 Prescription refills. 1. Except as specified in subsection 2, a prescription for any prescription drug or device which is not a controlled substance shall not be filled or refilled more than eighteen months after the date on which the prescription was issued and a prescription which is authorized to be refilled shall not be refilled more than twelve times. 2. A pharmacist may exercise professional judgment by refilling a prescription without prescriber authorization if all of the following are true: a. The pharmacist is unable to contact the prescriber after reasonable effort. b. Failure to refill the prescription might result in an interruption of therapeutic regimen or create patient suffering. c. The pharmacist informs the patient or the patient’s representative at the time of dispensing, and the practitioner at the earliest convenience that prescriber reauthorization is required. 3. Prescriptions may be refilled once pursuant to subsection 2 for a period of time reasonably necessary for the pharmacist to secure prescriber authorization. 4. An authorization to refill a prescription drug order shall be transmitted to a pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber’s authorized agent pursuant to section 155A.27, except that prescription drug orders for controlled substances shall be transmitted pursuant to section 124.308, and, if not transmitted directly by the practitioner, shall also include

6. MUST BE MEMORIZED: Iowa has an unusual limit that for non-controlled prescriptions:
a. The number of refills must not exceed 12. PRN is a void script.
b. The expiration date of the prescription is EIGHTEEN MONTHS from the written date.

This is 155A.29 in the statutes. That particularly oddity frustrates the VA in some form at times.

Whats the best way to prepare for Iowa MPJE? is there a preferred resource or a study guide? appreciate it. Thank you.

And this is why I would never practice outside of my state. It is just soooo complicated figuring out the more restrictive laws set by the State. Ugh!
