Okay, I measured out the width or my labcoat and its 7.5" give or take. I'm trying to figure out if it will fit in the coat pocket short of going to the store with my labcoat. Does anyone carry around the IPAD with them or just a IPOD TOUCH/PDA?

Depends on what you need to do with it. If reading a text go with iPhone/itouch. If images go with iPad. You can easily take your lab coat in dry cleaners and they can stich pocket for your iPad.

My 1st Gen iPad fits perfectly in all of my random off-the-shelf white coat outside pockets, if I take it out of the case. It does poke out of the top a little bit.

Honestly, the iPad is great for reading on rotations due to the large screen size, long battery life, light weight, etc. But there's no need to carry the damn thing around with you on rounds.

I keep my phone on me for rounding, and keep the iPad in my backpack in my locker or office to read when I have a few minutes of downtime at lunch or whatever.
