Hey all, I'm interested in purchasing an iPad for rotations and was wondering if you all had any opinions on which would be more appropriate for rotations. please do not turn this into an apple bashing thread, i've already explored android options (I have a droid phone) and i'm not interested in windows 8. thanks!

nevermind. didn't realize there was such a huge gap in performance between the two. mods, please delete this thread at your convenience.

Well, when you're asked a question on rounds, no one wants to see you pull out the iPad/iPad mini or any other device to look it up so it's no use then.

Otherwise when you're doing other work and need to type up papers and DI questions/responses, you're probably better off with a laptop. Just get yourself a Macbook Air if you're a Apple fan.

I think everyone uses a iPhone though. Especially for Dosing, I don't use it at all, except to do my work. And if they are asking each other questions about drugs I never heard of before, I look it up... I also use micromedex before I consult a patient, since everyone is using a computer on the floors.

Doctors usually ask me pathophysiology questions and some pharmacology questions... I'm better with those than I am with drugs lol... They never asked me one question about drugs anyways 🙂, so I never got to use micromedex much when I was rounding in the team... Too busy taking down notes with my notebook.

It's cool if you wanna use your iPhone or iPad mini or even your books when you're working up the patients. But on rounds, unless you snap fire an answer back without looking it up, it's gonna look bad.

How are you going to haul around a laptop, or use it if you're on rounds?

At my last hospital rotation everyone had hospital issued laptop computers for rounds. It's how they looked at the patient chart and such during rounds.

They gave ipads to the medical residents at my last hospital rotation. They were able to look at charts on it, but they had to go on a desktop or nursing station to do orders.

We do this as well.

I just showed up with a notebook and a pen.

People just can't take the training wheels off these days. Security blanket with a fruit on it.

We're told to get to the hospital 2 hours before rounds to work up patients then. I figure that's a good time to jot notes down on a small pad and look up doses/adjustments blah blah.

For therapeutics, we have pharmacotherapy forms that students submit online for an exam. I like to handwrite them while most type stuff. I am having a real hard time breaking free from notepad and paper and switching to flipping out my phone.

I'm not up for an upgrade till july so I'm hoping a note 3 or the like will be out by then. But after by current rotation, I think this would be ideal.

OoOoOohhh you might be onto something. I'm putting it on my Black Friday Amazon wish list :meanie:

Not on rounds, I'm talking about when you're at the nursing station just reviewing info or compiling your pre-round stuff, and other projects. Laptops are easier to do this on than tablets.

The stylus makes me laugh...seems old school. Reminds me of back in the day when I was a student, no one had smart phones and you had to use a PDA/Palm. This was in 2008...things have changed and my old Dell Axim (top of the line back then) is one useful as a paperweight.

Pretty much what I'm thinking, too. It makes me feel old as all hell. Dell Axim v50. That thing was a hoss back in the day.

You really don't need anything these days, though. Every hospital has limitless references and computer terminals are everywhere. I say all of you just take off the training wheels.

I'd grant you that but I'm still leaning to the phablet with a stylus as I've run into two things at my current rotation: A) my phone's internet is often faster than the hospital's computers B)my phone does not have proxies blocking stuff (can't get on clinical pharmacology or my school email at my current rotation...wtf?)

Its not what you carry during rounds. Its more important to be prepared and know the drug regimen patients are on and how you can contribute to improving patient outcomes. If all you ever want to do is answer what that drug is for by looking up lexi , I suggest you carry the biggest baddest and fastest retina display super duperb tablet.

But I would be more impressed with someone with simple notecards who worked up all the patients before the round.

I feel bad that the my expensive Dell Axim (gift from the folks) is just collecting dust. Literally, collecting dust.

For my last APPE rotation, the hospital had COWs (computer-laptop on wheels) for rounding. That was really useful compared to carrying around a laptop all day.

For the most part, a good smartphone or ipod should suffice.

Yeah, they had that at the hospitals where I did my Internal Med.

I sold my Dell Axim x51v WITH GPS to ebay in '08 for $200! Yeaaaaa!!! >_> Get current with technology so you don't miss out on getting rid of old techs on the brink of extinction.

Agree...working in the hospital now, I don't use my iphone or tablet for references. I just use the computer...much easier.

Damn! I wonder what I could get for mine now...$5?

dang I still use my Axim x50v sitting on my desk as an mp3 player. Throw in one of those big fat Compact Flash memory cards, put on TCPMP which displays album art, and there's just enough control using your fingernail that you can throw out the stylus.
