Hi, I have a MacBook Pro and want something more portable (in addition) to take to class/travel with. Which would be better for med school- ipad or netbook in the next three years?

I have an iPad, and I can't speak about a Netbook. Personally, I like the iPad for reading books/articles and other various activities. To write and take notes, you could use an iPad note-taking app with a wireless keyboard and a case that has a stand. Try out both an iPad and a netbook and see what fits you better.

Is this solely for note-taking purposes in class?

The iPad is terrible for handwritten notes. Wacom-enabled tablets with Microsoft Office OneNote are ideal for taking and organizing handwritten (and typed up notes). Check out Asus EP121 if you want an ipad-like Windows device.

and to view lecture slides, pdf files, etc. load books. (to get books on ipad should i get the 32gb instead of 16gb? won't be loading any personal music or pictures on it)

i hate typing on touchscreen so i'll definitely get the bluetooth keyboard case as well.

let me know if any of you have experience with it! thanks for your replies so far. hoping to make a purchase by tomorrow so any input appreciated

I'd get a netbook, unless you really love apple products. It's cheaper and provides all the same benefits.

Have you tried typing on the netbook? For me, the keyboard is so compact that I am often pressing two keys simultaneously, and I don't even have large hands/fingers. Further, your abilities are hindered with a netbook since they are so cheaply made you get components that can't even handle HD video stream. I would personally get a real computer and forget about both the macbook and netbooks (garbage).

Edit: I just read you have a macbook pro. Sell it and get a lenovo x220 or a smaller macbook. There's no reason why you should have many electronic devices when you can have one that does them all. When you're home, if the small screen bothers you, connect it to an external monitor.

I'd take a 13" laptop over a netbook any day. For what you're wanting I think I'd go with a tablet (whether that means an Ipad or not is up to you to go comparison shopping haha, I don't have one and really have no idea which I'd choose without reading up on it).

a compact laptop + wacom bamboo tablet fulfills all of the OP's needs. Ipad is worthless and so are netbooks.

you should look into lightweight 11 or 13 inch laptops rather than a notebook in my opinion.

One that I found very nice when it gets on sale is the Asus U35JC/36JC, they're only about 4lbs and produce so much more power than a netbook, has over 7+ hours of batterylife and can turn into a true laptop[when on full power w/ video card] that still handles 3-4hours of maximum use

my macbook pro is 13inch. it's not that heavy I guess. doesn't fit into my purse though haha...

i'm definitely getting a netbook or ipad (or some other tablet? i don't really know what's out there- recommendations welcome) so please suggest between those two! thanks!

I'd stick with the Macbook Pro if you really have the 13in model. Half my class has 13in MBP's. Some had netbooks but most had full laptops. In my opinion the marginal benefit of a slightly lighter netbook is far out-weighed by spending another $300 AND having notes/pdfs/other stuff split between two computers.

Just get a backback or tote-bag that can hold your MBP.

well i'm definitely going to keep my MBP. i've had it only for a few months now so it's pretty new as well. i'm not replacing the ipad/netbook with my MBP. but for instance i go abroad a lot and don't want to have to carry my computer around if it's not necessary. for me at least, portability is a big issue. like this summer, i am backpacking europe, and would rather take a netbook/ipad to finish secondaries than my MBP.

You already have a computer - so an Ipad would be a perfect compliment. Especially with the new updates coming, itll be totally worth it.

Get a 1st generation 16 MB - thats all you need and should be around $300. You can definitely take hand written notes (check out iAnnotate for PDFs and PenUltimate)

You can access your laptop via the internet through your Ipad too with whole bunch of software like Logmein ignition. On top of that, Apple just introduces their iCloud thats going to make everything a whole lot better.

Netbooks suck at almost everything, why would you buy one when you already have a superior computer? Ipad beats out a computer at least in web browsing, reading notes/books experience. Plus I prefer it to annotate my PDFs as well.

put macbook pro in bag.
carry bag on shoulder.
take notes on it without spending hundreds of $'s
???
profit

:smack:

I'm sure you can find a gucci bag to fit your notebook in.

Too many netbooks are severely under-powered. I have seen a number of them in a lecture where they took at least a minute or two to boot up, and that is before Windows actually starts up, so it's mostly a hardware issue at that point. Just get a regular laptop instead, there are very affordable ones with decent built quality. Macbook, an obvious good choice because of the strong OS and hardware, but pricey. Windows 7 based laptops, also excellent, more affordable and Windows 7 is an almost flawless operating system.

Either will be a good choice, I am going to give a nod to the macbook, simply because it's a worry-free out of the box experience.

As for the the ipad, it's not a great laptop replacement.

asus eepad transformer. hands down the best value and best of both worlds.
