So I got an iPad2 (and eagerly awaiting my first iPeriod) in exchange for a desktop. Just curious, soon to be fourth year, would I come off as a tool toting this thing around on rotations? Most ERs and Hospitals are now wifi enabled and I see lots of friends using their iTouches (that just sounds weird) and phones (however, it comes off like they are texting) I kinda see it as a good tool for use for quick access to information (cant access EMR at most sites) as well as easy access to images (to describe stuff to patients) and seems like it would be pretty easy to set up some templates (chest pain, diarrhea, ab pain, peds crap, etc).

Secondly, do I really need this panoptic I wasted a ton of money on and only used during years 1 and 2? It'd be nice to ebay this thing.

Thanks folks, late congrats to all that matched!

1) Likely yes

2) Likely no

1) I guess so.

2) Am confused, are you a 3rd or 4th year? If you haven't done your clerkships yet: you may need some sort of ophthalmoscope, so don't ditch it just yet. If you are a rising 4th year and have gotten by with just using whatever is available in the hospital, you are unlikely to need it between now and graduation.

I love my panophthalmoscope. I can see the optic disc in 95% of people with the panophthalmoscope. With the standard, I can see around 65%. I love to document a normal fundoscopy with a head injury that I'm not going to CT or a headache that I'm not going to CT and/or LP. On occasion, I can even see spontaneous venous pulsations with the panophthalmoscope. I've never seen those with the standard.

Embrace your tooledness without worrying about what other people think. I have total Ipad envy right now, but can't justify the purchase in my current circumstance.

I for one, give you permission to be a nerd. You are a nerd. You are asking this question, which proves your insecurity as a result of being a nerd.

I couldn't justify spending my OWN money on an iPad. Therefore, I used the hospital CME funds on it, under the thinly veiled disguise of buying an AudioDigest subscription. They had (or may still have) an offer where if you did a 3 year subscription, you got a free iPad (or the equivilant value of Best Buy gift card to buy said iPad). The CME is pretty decent (if you like the audio thing), and it's the easy way to backdoor an iPad while getting something else meaningful out of the deal (3 years of CME).

Exactly what my wife did. Spent I think $1300, which will be reimbursed, and got a nice $570 BBY gift card. Can't beat that! Unfortunately, we are still waiting for her iPad of choice to come in, since it is back ordered......

I saw that deal. If you work the numbers, you end up paying the same for the digest + iPad out of pocket.

I may be mistaken but it sounds as if people are using CME funding to pay for digest thus getting the iPad essentially free.

I guess. I pay for my CME and then get it paid back as a non-taxable reimbursement. However, since I could buy a laptop or iPad outright and claim it as business expense, there was no advantage for me.

Yeah, its essentially the same, however, i cant go to a conference this year (just had our second kid thursday night), so i had to use some cme cash somehow or I would lose it. There isnt a ton else i need this year, so I figured if i had my employer buy the cme, a free ipad wouldnt be such an awful thing ( since my wife wouldnt let me buy one outright anyways). Actually did a ton of the AD cme while we were waiting for them to actually do the c-section ( they were 6 hours backlogged due to emergencies, etc)
