I was wondering if anyone has considered the atlantic bridge program and schools in Ireland? They say that a lot os US and Canadian citizens end up getting residency after they finish in North America.

Has anyone studied and Ireland and returned to the US or Canada? Is an MD from Ireland equivalent to an MD in North America?

You might want to head over to the international medical forums to see if they're talking about this question.

However, I would have to caution anyone planning on going overseas and banking on a US residency. Given the expansion of medical schools here in the US (both MD and DO), the increase in class size for established schools, etc., the competition for IMGs will just get worse. If you want a US residency, your best bet would be a US med school of any kind.

As for the degrees being "equivalent", to get a US residency, you have to take and pass all steps of the USMLE, thus getting licensed as a US physician. Therefore, the degrees are "equivalent" as you must pass the same licensing exams.

I looked at the program a few years back. Seemed great and I love Ireland. The one "negative" I heard was that since they are European schools, the classes are not geared toward the USMLE. It requires more independent studying and preparation for the US boards.
