As an M1 with no earned income for 2016, are we required to file a tax return? I was told loans are not reported as income. My apologies if this topic has been discussed.

You do not have to file federal taxes but you may have to file local taxes if you're filed in the past. My local bureau bothers me every year with it, and I have to report to them that I'm a student making zero income.
