I'm a 4th year med student from an osteopathic school. Like most schools ours does not have a true home program. During my 3rd year I didn't do an anesthesia elective. I opted instead to schedule 3 away rotations at allopathic hospitals w/residency programs figuring I would get a better experience and learn more. Found out today that 1 of my programs got filled for the month of october. I have confirmed anesthesia rotations for september and november @ Miami and JHU.

Would it make a big difference if I only did 2 roations in anesthesia or should I try really hard to get that 3rd.

I wouldn't stress on getting 3 unless you are "borderline" and need all the love you can muster in person...

Two is more than enough. I only did one. i did a month of pain for fun. Then I did a one day informal rotation at the place I eventually matched at.

Rotations are only good for one thing...letters. Get a good letter from Gallagher or Labarsky (sp) (the chairman I think) and rock your rotation at JH.

Spend the rest of your forth year goofing off and traveling to interviews. Also, do NOT leave JH for any interview. If you like Baltimore and want to match there work hard, take voluntary call, and do NOT ask for days off to interview at other places eventhough they will let you. I still think that it looks bad.

I'd love to match @ JHU but I'm rotating during november. What do I do if I'm offered an interview? JHU is just one program and as much as I love it, I feel its a reach for me. How do I handle getting other invites

The reason I point to 2 is that I didn't do any anesthesia rotations during my 3rd year and those are the only ones I had scheduled for 4th year.
