Or is it better to wait until the paper is accepted somewhere to update? I don't want to spam schools with too many updates if it's not necessary.

They in the same class as "MS submitted". They're NOT publications; hell, they haven't even bee peer reviewed.
My beef with BioRxiv is that some crummy, if not outright bogus papers on COVID went into there, and right wing media picked up on the findings that COVID wasn't that dangerous, or that medical X worked on the disease, when all other data suggested that the opposite was correct. Said papers then mysteriously disappeared.
