I'm still waiting for many interviews from schools like Tufts, BU, NYU, and Temple. I kinda submitted the application late (late August).
My oGPA was 3.43 and sGPA was 3.34 at that time,
but my oGPA dropped to 3.39 after the fall semseter.
But I took all hardcore/recommended classes this semester, so I believe this can somehow justify the drop in GPA, but still it dropped.

Should I do the academic update or not?

If GPA dropped its useless to update...don't update unless you improved some stats

Don't update. Its optional, most people do it if their stats improved.

What if I need to update my coursework for classes that are fulfilling requirements? I have to add a biology class/lab grade.. But my GPA will drop... Should I submit it? I'm afraid that it's going to hurt my chances of getting into a school I just interviewed for... I have an explanation as to why my grade is not that great [family tragedy the day of my last lab exam and the week before the final...].. Should I submit the grade and send a letter explaining the situation?

I updated it anyway just because I didn't do too horribly in my classes but my GPA this past semester wasn't as high as it was compared to previous semesters.

Honestly, if it was me, I just wouldn't submit at all. If they've already interviewed you, then they're okay with your pre-req requirements. They don't have to see the grades for it until you've been accepted and have to send a final transcript.

What about updating higher fictitious grades and using the typo excuse if they say something?

I dont think you can and you shouldnt do this.
After you esubmit, you have to send your transcripts to aadsas for clarification.

Can you do a partial update meaning only listing the good grades you received?

I agree with the above posts, update only if your GPA will rise. Here is my logic: If you were accepted to a school then they will ask for your Fall 2011 grades directly. Meanwhile if you are still waiting for some potential interviews and your GPA is lowered by the update then it makes sense to avoid it so you can still try to interview elsewhere.

Basically the update is useful if you gain from it, I wouldn't do it if it hurt my GPA.
