is Case Western a research school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
absolutely not. In fact, when I interviewed, I said I am interested in research, and the student tour person gave me the weirdest look like WTF are you doing here?

for dent no for med yes.....in dent you only get to do research in the summers when i was there for my interview they really talked down research

In defense of Case, what the hell do you want to do research for? Is it a plus on your app for specializing?

Otherwise, it sounds like more work than I want to do. I want clinical experience so I can make some money. (I do know that specializing leads to increased income as well, but research got old sophmore year)

I just wanted to know about the school. That's all.
No need to get offended!

Sorry, my language was strong, and wasn't meant to be directed at you per se, but to all predents in general.

Research is not going to be a part of my 4 years if given a choice.

One of my interviewers at Case Western was the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and all he talked about was research during my interview. The options are definitely there if you're interested.

When I told an adcom at Case that I was interested in possibly pursuing research, he told me that three years ago he would have sent me to Columbia or UPenn. However, he said that in recent years, they have built up their research faculty members and that he was not going to send me to look at Columbia or UPenn. I know they also have summer research programs and that a good majority of the class participates in it...

and why do a lot of these posts always come back to earning money?

I did do a research in my freshmen year. Case has gradually began to be more research focused. In my year, there were about 12 students who participated in research.

Research is a good way to enhance your resume if you want to specialize. If you do a research in a field you are thinking of specializing, you will not only learn about that area in detail (giving you a head start), as well as getting to know most/if not all of the departmental faculties (which may give you an upperhand if you do plan on applying in that specialty at Case). Also, you may have a chance to get your reseach published in a major journal (which a was able to do), and this will make your resume stand out as not a lot of people can say that they have a research published in a dental journal. You will also be paid for the research and one researcher each year will be able to represent Case at the national ADA meeting (all expenses paid) to present his/her research.
