I have a few out of state interviews and I am traveling by myself. I know you can bring a guest with you but so far I havent seen anyone bring anybody else to accompany them at the interviews. Are you guys traveling by yourself? I don't like it because I only stay for the interview and fly back immediately after and I don't even get to see what the city is like..
You guys feel the same way?

It's kind of hard to get a feel for a city in a few hours. Your best bet is to do some research at home on the internet.

Even if I had a friend who was in that city that could take me around, what would he show me that would make/break my decision about that school? I'm missing class to go to my interviews, so I just want to get in and get out.

Ask the dental students that you meet there plenty of questions, and compare cities on the internet to see cost of living, crime, commute, etc...

My wife and I have spent some time on realtors.com just looking at what kind of house/condo we could afford in different cities.

i have to travel by myself because i dont have a girlfriend =(...hehehe

It would be great if time permitted further exploration of the school and the surroundings (in person). I heard one student services guy (Case?) suggest coming a day early and hanging out. He said he hated when people flew in, interviewed, and flew out. What does he expect? A lot of us have school and limited time and money.

My last job afforded me the opportunity to see a lot of places, so I know which cities I can and can't handle living in. I'm not applying until next cycle. But I'm trying to visit as many of the schools I think I will apply to ahead of time. I've already crossed one off my list. Just didn't like the whole vibe. Better to know now then when I show up for an interview.

I'm going to be flying in to places the day before (time depends on cheapest flights) and then flying out the day of interviews. I feel like schools should provide housing so we don't have to spend 100s of dollars if we want to stay an extra day to visit places.

for real my midwestern interview is costing me almost 400! flying in on the 12th, interview on the 13th morning, then flying out later that night.

230 for the flight
50 for the shuttle bus to the hotel
50 for the hotel stay
plus im missing 2 days of work

this is just 1 interview, i applied to 12 schools so who knows how much im gonna be in debt for this.

Thats not too bad; 50 for a hotel is a good deal. But yeah, I already lost 180 from a flight I won't be taking. I'm not looking forward to how much my california school's interviews will cost (if I get them).

It really does surprise me that they don't offer any sort of student housing for interviews.

50 for a shuttle bus? You could have rented a car for that much.

It is all a conspiracy by dental schools. First, they make us go in hella debt. This leads us to demand a high wage to pay off our debt. Predents see how much money we are making. They apply to, go through dental school and take on debt. The cycle continues.

Certain interviews I'm traveling by myself, some with my parents, and I think my girlfriend may come to a couple, we'll see

i'm just flying there and back for my NYU interview so i'm going alone. i figure if i get in i'll take a weekend, travel down and get a feel for the city. that's probably what i'm going to do with the rest of my east coast interviews (providing i get them:xf:)

for the ones in the midwest and west coast one of my best guy friends said he'll come with me just because i'm so unfamiliar with the area and its far so if anything happened i'd want someone i trust there with me. my parents stress me out so i'm not bringing them to any 😳

im going with either my mom, dad, or both 🙂

If/when I get an interview, I will most likely go alone. I really enjoy being independent and don't mind being alone. Plus, it would be nice to only have yourself to worry about and you can make the visit on your own schedule. I might take a bf if I had one 😀

Definitely this!

Except for my Western interview where it happened to coincide with a road trip down to LA that I was already planning with a couple of my best friends... so I'm just gonna take a quick detour there. Man, I really hope I'm not gonna be hungover during the interview...

Provided I get any interviews (Please?!), I'll be going by myself. I've never traveled completely alone, just with friends, so I'd be pretty excited to go by myself. I've found that I'm usually the one that knows how to read a map, knows where to go, etc., so I'm not too worried.

is this midwestern, IL?
What hotel is $50? Mine is more.
But the shuttle should only cost you $25.

im bringing a couple friends to las vegas with me and staying the weekend. i just have to hunker down and lay low the night before the interview, but after that... hahaaaaa

I'm applying next cycle and am dreading the cost of interviews! It's too bad there wasnt an agency that provided teleconference for OOS interviews.

Yeah, but part of the interview is getting to know the school. The costs do stink though.

It cost too much to go with someone. I am planning to drive to couple interviews overnight.

My husband and I drove up together, it was cheaper than a flight. We will do the same for a few other interviews, and I will drive solo on 2. A few others I am sure I will have to fly if I get interviews where I am hoping.
