Saw that Filipino is considered URM at UC irvine, is this true for most california schools?
There are so many Filipinos specifically in cali haha. That's interesting
More specifically there are so many Filipino doctors. There are so many Filipinos specifically in cali haha. That's interesting
I hate to be cynical but I wonder if the school was/is trying to boost their proportion URM by including Filipinos. They've no Native Americans and no Pacific Islanders. Adding Filipinos boosts them from 20 to 25% URM. Each school can define URM as it pleases and it must report its efforts at a diverse faculty and student body when it comes up for review by LCME, the accrediting agency for med schools.
We can use workforce needs as a consideration in admissions.I thought California schools don't consider race in admissions. Wasn't affirmative action outlawed in California during the 90s?

These are not under-represented groups. How about Sikh, or Jain?
There are a couple schools that define LGBTQI as URM in their marketing statistics. This cynical thought has crossed my mind.I hate to be cynical but I wonder if the school was/is trying to boost their proportion URM by including Filipinos. Most Hispanic groups are not considered UiM, either. It might be if you consider yourself Hispanic.
They are not (except at UCI).I thought URM was about racial representation in the workforce. This may be an ignorant question, but if there are a lot of Filipino doctors in Cali why are they URM?
They are not (except at UCI).
Filipinos are under-represented in CA colleges and universities, but because of the huge influx of Filipino doctors in the 20th century, they are extremely well-represented in the physician workforce.
You'll have to ask Dr Peterson.I thought the idea behind URM policies in med admissions is about addressing needs in the workforce. If there are a lot of Filipino physicians why are they considered URM by UCI? Is there a huge Filipino population but not many Filipino doctors in Irvine?
I was already going to apply to UCI anyway but now I'm feeling way way better about my chances there!
You'll have to ask Dr Peterson.
