Don't think so. But that news about UCI is really surprising 😵

I thought URM was about racial representation in the workforce. This may be an ignorant question, but if there are a lot of Filipino doctors in Cali why are they URM? I guess there is a shortage in Irvine? I wonder what other groups are considering URM and by what schools aside from Mexicans, African Americans, Native Americans and Puerto Ricans.

I hate to be cynical but I wonder if the school was/is trying to boost their proportion URM by including Filipinos. They've no Native Americans and no Pacific Islanders. Adding Filipinos boosts them from 20 to 25% URM. Each school can define URM as it pleases and it must report its efforts at a diverse faculty and student body when it comes up for review by LCME, the accrediting agency for med schools.

hmm, well I was just wondering for my own sake haha. I didn't mean to stir the pot. I also noticed that UCSF dental listed Filipino as URM too, so I just thought it may be possible in Cali.

I thought California schools don't consider race in admissions. Wasn't affirmative action outlawed in California during the 90s?

We can use workforce needs as a consideration in admissions.

How about Sikh, or Jain? Or are these considered Asian applicants?

There are a couple schools that define LGBTQI as URM in their marketing statistics. This cynical thought has crossed my mind.

They are not (except at UCI).
Filipinos are under-represented in CA colleges and universities, but because of the huge influx of Filipino doctors in the 20th century, they are extremely well-represented in the physician workforce.

I thought the idea behind URM policies in med admissions is about addressing needs in the workforce. If there are a lot of Filipino physicians why are they considered URM by UCI? Is there a huge Filipino population but not many Filipino doctors in Irvine?

You'll have to ask Dr Peterson.

I was already going to apply to UCI anyway but now I'm feeling way way better about my chances there!

If I had done better research I def would have applied to UC Irvine myself (Pilipino myself).
