Ok, so Im wondering, for the people who are starting Dental School, are scholarships normal to get.

Are they need based?
Merit based?

For the ones who got them? How much are they per year?

I hope I win a scholarship so that I dont have to be in debt 300K...that sucks dude..Jesus.

How can I win a scholarship? Outside resources

Fastweb sucks..one guy won some scholarships and all they do is advertise him

Ok, but here's the thing

I heard that after you get out, the Navy or Military can send you to some crazy places for 4 years..and I dont want to go to Burundi, giving free root canals to people, then getting eaten by Gustave, the 22 feet crocodile that lives in the Rusizi lake in Burundi which is still alive and the movie primeval was based on that....LOL

but seriously, does the Navy send you to weird places?
I really want to live at home in Southern Cali and practice

It depends on the school, but most schools are much more likely to offer merit and need-based scholarship for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. They have already met you and can evaluate you according to the standards set by the school (instead of trying to evaluate everyone's performance from a million different undergrads.)

Penn is famous for its Dean's Scholarship, where a few incoming students get half off tuition for the 4 years (comes out to like 80K total)....I imagine other schools do the same. I was offered a opne-time 5K merit scholarship when I was accepted to UConn (though I chose to go to Buffalo instead.)

I would call all the schools you were accepted to and ask about any scholarship possibilities....even outisde of the school (like research departments, community dentistry grants, etc.) New York State offers a tuition assistance grant that you apply for with FAFSA, though you have to be a resident.

If you don't get one the first year, there will probably be many opportunities in the last three. However, there simply is no way to get away from the INSANE cost of dental school. Max out your public loans, supplement with private...it's all you can do. Good luck!

unfortunately there are not many...sometimes awards given to the highest grade in a class, a religious scholarship, a memorial, or something else. The school usually notifies the students of any scholarships, but otherwise you should look around.

Ideas: sometimes your highschool will have a scholarship for someoe going into the health profession, boy scouts, religious group (baptist, LDS, catholic, muslim, etc. talk to your denomination), research, clubs, etc.

so then if there is a higher chance of getting a scholarship the next years, then why does everybody say on here that YOU'RE GOING TO BE IN DEBT 300-350K..

Jesus, that's such a scary number people....stop saying that...:beat:

Makes me wanna beat a cow..

I can't believe you could have the possibility of coming out of Penn, an Ivy school that is awesome with just 80K, WOW:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

I so want to go to Penn now, if I get in.

typically scholarships are 1000-1500. With tuition and living somewhere in the neighborhood of 80K a year (same at Temple and other schools) then you will come out of school with 300-350

Scholarships help drive down those numbers, but not by much in the total % of things. Money is still money though, but free money is better.

U may also want to check the ADEA's website. There are a few on there u may b eligible for.

There's WICHE if you live in a western state without a D school

I think you're "beating a dead horse".

NYU offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships. Even one or two full tuition I believe. I was offered 10k per year as long as I keep the gpa over 3.3.

just a lil FYI.... tuition at penn is $50k/year...addition expenses add up to $80k/year total. deans scholarship, which is very hard to get would make your tuition $25k/year + 30k/year other expenses. that's $55k/year x 4 years is still $220k of debt over 4 years if you take out the entire cost in loans. in addition, when factoring in the accruing interest you're looking at about $255k in debt even with the deans scholarship.

it's reality buddy.

I got the same deal at Pacific, minus the GPA restriction. Of course it's 1 less year, so I only get 30k overall.

I'm not bragging, I'm just laying out some facts so Toothguy gets an answer. I got scholarships to Iowa, UoP, UCSF, Harvard, and Penn. I think they're merit-based, but I'm only saying that because don't we all "need" money for d-school?

Per year, the scholarships were:

Iowa: 15k
UoP: 10k
UCSF: 1k
Harvard: 10k
Penn: half tuition

Thanks for this....I had meant to write before that the Dean's Scholarship came out to around 80K total SAVINGS (not 80K for dental school) the year I applied.

You mean 10k on that UCSF scholarship right? Just a typo?😉

i'm sure a 1k scholarship would lure a ton of potential students....

It's not a typo. I'm going to UCSF on a $4000 scholarship.

I will say what everyone is thinking.

You can get a scholarship much easier if you are a minority. It is extremely difficult as a non-minority. Unfair, yes, but that is how it is.

I got offered 5K from one school, 9K from a second, and the third school that I applied to didn't offer scholarships until the class was set and I turned them down.

It's good to get anything but don't count on a scholarship paying a significant portion of the cost of attendance if you are going to a public school. I don't know what private schools are like.

OSU gives a couple hundred bucks to almost everyone. Like a $350 scholarship is really a scholarship when you never actually see the money and everybody gets it.

Kind of a joke if you ask me.
