Is independent practice a viable option in radiology?

I know IR has opportunity for solo or small group OBL work, just wondering if this is also possible for DR? I imagine breast would be most conducive but unsure if equipment cost is too high to run a solo breast clinic.

To hang up a shingle and open a practice? Extremely hard. You need a lot of expensive equipment and staff to run it. If you were very experienced you could find a way, but definitely not as a new graduate.

To go around doing locums and telerad? Sure. But you'll basically still be working for a group or corporation.

It is very hard in radiology. If you want that kind of practice, do a different field something like family practice, derm or some surgical subspecialties.
