is it bragging to say you graduated cum laude?

I've been wondering this because I'm going to graduate in a few weeks and am drafting letters to several professors and doctors whom I would like to do research with in the fall. I remember what a pain it was to start research at a university I wasn't affilated with (i wrote ~20 professors before finding one who would offer a paying job), and i'm wondering if i slip in that I graduated magna or summa cum laude, if that would help increase my chances. But then i thought of the risk that this would make me seem like a braggart.

What do you guys think?

It'll be in the resume/CV you should be submitting with or after said letters...I'd just keep it in there so as to not make the wrong impression.

It goes on your CV (you're attaching your CV to your message, right?). If they're interested enough to read your CV they'll find out. There is no need to mention it outright in your message.

Often that information is or should be on resumes, so I don't really see how it would look bad to include it. Doctors, researchers etc want to know you were successful and can think well. Your grades show it, and you earned the right to say you did well. Go for it!

BRAGGING (Part 1):

To medical schools or other (successful) pre-meds probably not...at my school I think you get cum laude for anything between a 3.5-3.7 and this is usually below the median at most medical schools. I would probably only brag about Magna cum laude in AMCAS if you went to a "Hard" school or a ranked school. I would brag about getting Summa Cum Laude from any school (if you really need to pad the AMCAS). I needed to "pad" my AMCAS but since I only got Magna Cum Laude from a 3rd tier state school I decided against it.

BRAGGING (Part 2):

To anybody else absolutely (resumes, parents, chicks/dudes at bars who happen to like smart guys/girls but dont know about magna cum laude or summa cum laude, people at grocery stores, facebook page, craigslist hookers...) Although I usually don't brag about myself unless it is in a resume or people ask.

It belongs in your CV where you list education. You say that you got your degree and after it just put "Cum Laude" (Or in my case...Summa Cum Laude *bragging* hehe)

Like someone else said, if they are interested enough they will read your CV and see it there.

all right into the CV it goes.

thanks for the input, everyone. Now i guess I'll have to rely on the quality of my writing...crap
