Is it just me...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, it ain't just you. I'm never going to that site AGAIN. How depressing. Lies, I tell you! I'm just kidding...smart kids, you know? But, it's pretty self-selecting -- that is, I think only those students who have done really, really well have the b*lls to post...if you're average (which is obviously the majority), what's the point? You're not alone! 😎

There's a reason why I don't post a link to my MDapplicants page. My super stellar stats are non-existent.

yeah, everyone has good stats, that's for real!

whatever...get over it...just look at averages for everyone who gets in...it's all about superegostroking for lotsa people...

That place scares me too. It's a good place to kill your confidence.

hey when i said that a few months ago, i got totally bashed for my opinion. :meanie: but i agree with you.

Maybe everyone with good stats wants to show them off and post on the site. Everyone with not so super stats doesnt fill it out, like me.

Or...we fill it out and don't put a link in our SDN profile...

I'll fill it out AFTER i'm accepted somewhere!!!!

so, hopefully it'll give people hope LATER... but not now. Right now, I'll just drown in my own insecurities and pray. 😀

I use it to keep track of where I have interviews, etc. (otherwise my forgetful a$$ wouldn't remember).

And, you don't have to click on the link if you don't want to.

Is it just me or does it seem like every mdapplicant page has super stellar stats?

GOBUCKY!
Wow, I was just thinking this exact same thing. I was actually even going to start a thread about this. I clicked on one girl's profile on SDN, 42S and 4.0 GPA. Unbelievable that these people exist. Good for you, but after reading like 5 of these in a row, even if you have above average stats you start doubting that you'll ever get into med school.

Solution = Don't click on the profiles....yah right, not gonna happen. Too tempting 😉

No S**t. The false humble attitude is possibly the very worst aspect about this forum. Gunners bite. I'd rather just hear a poster say "i'm really happy with my stats!" than this "oh, my poor >30 mcat, and 4.23 gpa, it's not perfect, i just hope i get a carribean interview!" boo hoo hoo.

MDapplicants can be scary, but cmon people, you can get the average stats for each school from USnews.com. Normal people do get into top 20 schools. You dont have to be superhuman to do so.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but how do I add a link to my stats? Do I put it in my signature? Do I need the web address for my profile? Anyway, I've got WAY below average MCAT scores, so I'll gladly be the pioneer and add my link to my posts so all can see that maybe their stats aren't so bad! 😀

People are always knocking mdapplicants. I have my profile in my signature, but if you look you will see that I have my old profile from last year (with a much lower MCAT score) linked to my current profile. I think it is good for people to see how an application changes with a significant MCAT increase.

For anyone who is thinking to PM me about my MCAT (tons of people have asked), there is no secret to my score change. I studied a LOT more, with better materials (EK), and owned that b*tch 🙂

Treg

PS-If you don't want to link your profile to your sig, you should still make one for the site. That way, of your stats are "average" (whatever that means), you will be doing a service to the people with stats like yours who try to use the site to gather information about where people are getting interviews with those stats.

I think it is interesting to find out where people with these high stats don't even get interviews. Don't tell me that it is because their application is somehow deficient because I don't believe that. I truly believe some schools will reject the applicants with stellar stats pre-interview (and after collecting their cash) just because they don't think they will attend.

Interesting observation... I also see many cases of high stats people getting rejected from top ten schools, and I think it's because the admissions there is much more subjective... they have their pick of the applicant pool, so they can afford to put a lower emphasis on stats.

I think I did it. For those of you who need a confidence booster, click on the link below! 😀

I don't mind sharing. 😛

i don't think my stats were super stellar, but i don't care anymore since i'm accepted somewhere already 😉

Yeah so I was worried about GPA, my stats look very similar to yours. It makes me feel good that you got in. I wasn't premed, so my GPA isn't the 3.7 range I keep seeing. I would laugh at the premed's when they were stressing about grades, but now I see the folly of my ways. I think I am getting an ulcer from all of the worrying.

I got rejected last year even with a (what you people call high) 3.7. ****e happens. A 3.7 is right around average for a lot of schools.

I never said I was unhappy with my stats, I just said they were average. Chill out.

I think its depressing when you see someone with:
Overall GPA: 3.9
BCMP: 3.85
MCAT: 34

Published original research
president of the class
editor of school newspaper
Shadowing for 10 years straight
Volunteer in Africa and India for 2 years with peace corps

. . . and granted two interviews, and one acceptance

that's what depresses me, I mean, if they only get a couple of interviews, and end up with one acceptance with those stats, where am I going to land?

It's also not that high, either.

Anyways, when I do fill out an MDApplicants profile, I'm not linking it to this site.

You guys also have to remember that even the averages over there are skewed - take the Medical College of Wisconsin. http://www.mdapplicants.com/schoolsummary.php?schoolid=38

MDApplicants says that the average MCAT is a 32.3 with a 3.73
USNews says that the average MCAT is a 29.7 with a 3.70.

2.5 points on the MCAT is no small jump.

Just look at where they apply. If they overshot and undershot, then I'm not surprised. Pritzker seems to turn away people for being too smart, and WashU isn't going to be that impressed with a 34.

yea but people posting here and on mdapplicants are more likely to be among the top candidates, and certainly the most neurotic

I am a Canadian student. I went to a university in Canada for Engineering and I did not do well for personal reasons. I had no intention of going to medical school and I ended up with a 2.0gpa. I then decided that I wanted to pursue medicine so I enrolled at an American University and I have completed a Biology Degree in just 2 years with a 4.0gpa. The problem is that when you average a 4.0 and and 2.0, you get a cgpa of 3.0!!! What do you guys think??? I guess it could go either way...

I think people over-react when it comes to MDApplicants.com.

It makes some people feel better to be able to compare their stats and see where they are. (Hard to make a good comparison without reading personal statements and stuff, though.) Made it easier for me to decide where to apply when I saw general stats for matriculants, anyway.

I posted mine just in case it's helpful, but I'm not posting my link here...mainly because there are only about 5 premeds in my class, and we agreed not to tell each other our stats. (With only 5 of you and having to list your undergrad, it wouldn't be too hard to figure out who's who.)
