would adcoms give it a plus when you shift areas in health care.. im a dialysis tech right now and have been doing it for 2 years. now i got accepted as an ER tech in the hospital... should i go ahead and switch my current job and go to the hospital?

I don't think there is a huge impact on that.

My guess is that it would depend on how you represented it. If you talk about how, as a dialysis tech and then an ER tech, you got a chance to see different aspects of the health care field (kinds of patients, kinds of MDs, work environment, whatever) and that you learned something from it, then that might look good, but if you don't call attention to it, I don't think med schools will automatically read anything into it.

I think getting a greater variety is better so I would take the job!

It certainly wouldn't hurt you. IMO though, adcoms are wanting to see that when you apply to medschool you know what it is you're getting yourself into. I think you have probably answered that question already so whether you do it or not should be up to you.

2 yrs in one job and 1 yr (or more) in another = 3 years (or more) in one job

I wouldn't see one as greater than the other. On the other hand, going from a job where you rarely see physicians to one where they are present all the time might provide you with more information about the practice of medicine (granted just one of dozens of different areas of specailization).

i actually thing that adcoms would give you alot of attention because you've got alot of medical experience...

Only in so far as the applicant has an idea of what the practice of medicine involves. MCAT and gpa are going to be most important along with leadership, altruism/service, scholarly activity (if a research heavy school), and residency (some state schools).

thanks for the advise... i might give it a try and see if it wouldnt conflict with my school...
