First, I would like to apologize. I know this topic has been slaughtered. But I am freaking out. Recently I got into legal trouble. My two misdemeanor charges are MIC and Disorderly Conduct. I pleaded guilty but my charges were "Deferred Judgment".
How will this affect medical school admissions?
Have you already been accepted? If this happened in the interim, you need to call and tell the school. If you haven't or haven't applied yet, you need to figure out a few things:
1. Deferred judgment could mean that you entered a plea for the time being, and after you complete the course or AA meetings or whatever you need to do for running around drunk (I assume this is what that was) ... the charges will be dropped or reduced, which means the plea is dropped too. If this is the case, you won't need to report it on AMCAS, but it will still probably come up in a background check and will need to be explained when secondaries ask more specific.
2. If you did plead guilty, then you're just gonna have to explain everything.
3. Get a lawyer asap. Talk to him/her and see what they can do and what you need to answer/disclose. They can say exactly what you need to mention, but remember not to be dishonest. Adcoms see MIPs, D&Ds, alcohol citations, etc, and they get that sometimes things happen, everyone is young, etc ... so normally they aren't a game ender (I heard this from
LizzyM in a thread one time).
It will probably all work out okay, but get a lawyer, talk to him/her, and follow what they say.
