Has anyone in CA been able to gain true clinical experience without having a license/cert for EMT, CNA, or psych tech? As you all know, we can't hand a patient a glass of water without filling out a bunch of paper work. I volunteer at a hospital and at a doctors office and I'll be shadowing physicians of different specialties, but I don't think that that constitutes true clinical experience. Do you think schools will understand why most CA applicants will have no true clinical experience?

Nope they will never understand, they want you to be treating and prescribing medicine already...

That's what I thought. Maybe I can travel to another state and try to get some surgery under my belt. :xf:

Wait, shadowing doctors doesn't count as clinical experience?

this program is really good! going through it currently. CNA type duties. take vitals, order meals, help with procedures. and I'm in Labor and Delivery right now, so get to watch c section and vaginal births. We also get to clean tools, bag placenta, help a bit in the surgery room.

i "break in" to patients room and touch them..lol. thats my patient contact.. + clinical experience 😉

Some of my premed friends from Mexico have surgery experience.

Nope. Exposure, sure, but not experience, and while shadowing is critical you need actual clinical experience as well.

As far as clinical experience w/o a cert, I got some while in CA w/o a cert. OTOH, I got far better clinical experience back home doing a fulltime job where my employer actually certified in certain medically-related areas so that I could perform medical duties with our patients despite no formal certification as an EMT or licensure as an RN. (They certified us at the state level for a number of smaller tasks.)

Try to see if there's a physician's record assistant or "physician's scribe" job available. I work as a scribe in a couple ER's in Fort Worth. I basically follow around a doctor for his or her entire shift with a laptop, into each patient's room, recording the HPI, CC, ROS, PEx, PMHx, soc Hx, etc, and differentials, and order any labs/radiology/medicine/consults for the doctor, as well as complete the doctor's EMR for each patient, including diagnoses, f/up info, AVS, and d/c meds. Highly recommended.

Forgot: it's usually paid, since you're making the doctor's shift much, much easier, and faster.

I'm interested in applying for a scribe jobs and i was just wondering how much do they pay you say if you plan to work full time for one year? will it cover basic living expense? also how competitive is it to get a scribe position? thanks!
