I’m currently a sophomore in college and i have a 3.078 right now due to general chemistry being a killer. I also have 2 Withdrawals and hope it doesn’t look bad on my medical school application. I am an URF AA and plan on applying to Howard and Meharry and other schools as well as in state schools. Do you think i will be able to get my GPA up to be a good applicant, besides the community service and shadowing?

Focus the next 2 years getting a 4.0 and take a gap year and apply senior year, focus on Ec’s too. However it’s much easier said than done turning from a B to A student. Do you really want to be a physician?

The question asked above is the most important question. Do you want to be a physician? If the answer is a burning yes and you’re willing to work long and hard over the next decade, then It’s totally possible. I have a friend in med school right now that had a gpa as low his senior year. He killed the MCAT and took a gap year. It can be done.

You need more than “community service and shadowing” to apply. You also need 150+ hours of clinical experience- direct patient contact.

Yes! Without clinical experience how will you know that you want to spend the next 30+ years working with the sick, injured and dying. And don’t say “I just know”! That won’t fly with ADCOMS.
I see you joined SDN on Saturday. You’ll find lots of great information here. Spend some time reading the WAMC threads. You will be amazed at what is essentially your competition has for ECs. Some people have hundreds if not thousands of hours of many activities.
