Is it possible to switch into Rad Onc after starting PGY-1 in a different field by going through the match again? I understand it is very difficult but I have excellent stats (Step 1/2ck ~255, AOA, and many honors throughout 3rd and 4th year). I know I am deciding late but I am trying to schedule an extra 4th year elective in rad onc so I have a rotation on my transcript and to get a recommendation letter set up (however, it will just be a rotation with the rad onc department at my schools hospital as the department does not have a rad onc residency program). Also I have research but not in rad onc and I will try and do what I can but I am limited to basically April-June to do a rotation and maybe find some research since residency starts in July (I know rad onc research is a big deal).

Has anyone heard of someone being able to switch into a rad onc residency? And I have no problem with doing a PGY 1 year over again for the required intern year of rad onc. I know its a large uphill battle but I wanted to hear some advice.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it's very possible to switch even without repeating the PGY-1 year. The key is for you to be aware of programs which have openings for PGY-2s outside the Match. Look at this website, the ARRO website (www.astro.org/arro) and keep in touch with program coordinators of programs in which you have particular interest.

It is definitely feasible. Whether you apply through the match or outside the match for an open PGY-2 spot, you do ned to be aware that you are competing against applicants who have shown a genuine interest in radiation oncology- either by rotations in other Radiation Oncology programs (particuarly if there is no home residency program), and participating in Rad. Onc. research. You can boost you application by strving to do this.
