Is it really naive to hope I'll get off the waitlist?

Only got one interview from a school this cycle and I got put on the waitlist. They interviewed 75 OOS (I'm an OOS) and accepted 25, put 35 on the waitlist.

Called the school; as of now, they only have 5 OOS acceptees who are still deciding on multiple schools. That number seems miserably low.

At this point, should I consider it a done deal that I'm not getting in, or still continue to have some hope? For what it's worth, my interviewers personally told me that they fought hard for my application during the committee meeting. I've also done a ton of notable stuff since March (when I got the waitlist notification) and have been updating my school periodically. I will also send a letter of intent soon, though I don't know how much effect it'll have since I currently have no acceptances anyway.

So... will this stuff make a difference and possibly bring me to priority consideration, or is my goose cooked statistically?

I would send in the updates, but I would also prepare to reapply. In case it doesn't work out, you don't want your next application to be late.

If anything that applying to med school has taught me, it's that you should always prepare for the worst.

It would be prudent to start working on your reapplication but don't give up hope yet. There are plenty of people in medical school right now that only got into one school and plenty of people in medical school who got in off the waitlist. I know a person in my class who got in on the second day of school. I'm guessing that someone had a last minute change of heart and opened up the spot. Waitlist movement occurs until August.

It might be a little early now but if you don't hear by early June, you should prepare for another application season.

+1

I was on three waitlists two years ago, and had to reapply. Sent in updates, but nothing panned out. Hopefully you will be luckier, and get in, but should definitely prepare to reapply so your apps not late (if you are gonna jump right back in). Sometimes it's good to take a step back and evaluate what didn't work (Improve your GPA or retake the MCAT, get more clinical experience etc), so you can have a better application cycle the second time.

Good luck! I hope you get off the waitlist!

Have hope but start making your plans. I'm sitting on 4 waitlists and I'm starting my reapplication.

+1, I was on two wait lists now down to two. I'm wondering how late I can push back reapplying before actually biting the bullet and doing the whole process over again.

You have a 3.8 and a 34 mcat...did you only apply to only top tier schools? And OP what are your stats?

Focus on reapplying, because at the very least that will give you something to do. In addition, continuing contacting the school with letters and updates, even if you have done so already. At this point, what do you have to lose? Just let them know that they are your top(.only) choice and you can guarantee that you would matriculate if given the option (if true of course)

May 15th is usually when waitlists begin to move, but not knowing where you stand in waitlist means you could never be called off, or called off the day before classes start.

Best of luck
