Is it THAT risky to go into a program under probation?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Anybody did it?
What are the risks?
Thanks!
Be careful. You need to interview such a program at least as much as they interview you. If this is a well established program with a good rep otherwise, they'll probably straighten things out.

Why are they on probation? Do you get the same explaination from others? What are they doing about it? What do the residents say about it? Are there any entrys for the program at scutwork.com?

If they lose accreditation, you'll have to find a position elsewhere; depending on how you've done up until that time, and your specialty, this process may or may not be fairly painless.

Thank you very much.

anyone knows the status of the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville Internal Medicine Program? They were put in probation and had an ACGME visit in May 2005.

thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Programs can be put on probation and given a period of time to correct their deficiencies. Some are able to make the grade and some are not. It is not a good idea to rank a program that is on probation as you could wind up not being able to finish residency or even worse, not eligible to sit for boards.

Go to that ACGME website and ask questions of the programs that you interview at. The program directors should be very forthcoming about any deficiencies and knowledgable as to when the next site visit should be. If not, steer clear.

njbmd 🙂
