Hi everyone,

I have interviews coming up and I'd like to learn a bit about the healthcare system (I'm quite clueless) as part of my preparation. Is it worth it to buy "Understanding Health Policy" by Thomas Bodenheimer? I understand that it is a great book but it is somewhat expensive. Can I gain the same from just reading up stuff on the internet or is the book more effective? Thank you in advance. 🙂

The book isn't going to be very high-yield in my opinion if you're doing it just for interview prep. From what I remember, very few of my interviewers even brought up health policy issues.

I've posted it before and I'll post it again. If you get any health care questions, they'll most likely be about PPACA. This should suffice.

I actually have read that ge[m]! It was really helpful but should I know about things such as insurance, medical billing, Medicare, HMO/PPO...It all seems so cluttered and confusing. From what other posters are saying though, not knowing about these in detail is not a huge deal?

There's a book by two AMSA members, which might be available for free somewhere. It's also an $8 ebook on amazon. Google 'the health care handbook.'

And the AMSA premed committee is having a webinar on health policy on 11/18. Check out http://www.Facebook.com/amsapremed

Just have a general opinion on health care prepared and how you might improve it. You don't need to know all the details. Wikipedia 🙂
