Is language learning a hobby? Secondaries

I have to write about a favorite hobby/recreational activity this time for a secondary prompt.

Not sure if language learning would be a good topic - I am learning Spanish in school so outside class I've been listening to music and reading "easy" Spanish articles on the internet.

I read that adcoms like to see what potential students do outside studying, so it seems like language learning would be considered "studying".

Should I instead talk about a more "traditional" hobby like playing a musical instrument?

I looked and it said I can recreational activitie(S) so I guess I'll include both.
I've also studied abroad...no way I'm fluent!

I wouldn't classify yourself as learning a language until you have immersed yourself in the culture. If you studied abroad and had a chance to use the language effectively, definitely include it. If it's just something you do on your own time, it's probably fine to show that you have interest, but do not claim yourself to be fluent.

Hmm, but what if they ask you about it. Can you really demonstrate your passion for learning new languages if you're only practicing one?

On your primary, you can indicate in the languages spoken section that you have basic understanding of Spanish if you're able to do some conversational, I guess.
